For once, my smarmy avatar Echos (eh hehehe) my feelings about the topic of this thread. If they think this is gonna be Botcon, I've a feeling they're in for a massive blunder. The TF fans will just make TFCon their main botcon replacement. The Bronies will just stick to Ponycon (or whatever it's called), the Marvel and SW have their own things (because their fandomes are not based exclusively on toys), Joecon is still exists, and those are really about the only convention worthy properties Hasbro has.
And the fandoms are typically not crossovers. So why would a dedicated TF fan spend $1k on a trip to a convention that spends as much time on Littlest Petshop, Play-doh or Nerf, as it does TFs?

It does sound horribly corporatey right now.
On the plus side Rhode Islands convention centre is really nice and its late enough in the summer that prices are sometimes a bit lower. So thats something.

Plus Rorc works as a multi-toyline show, so it can be done. Course not being limited to Hasbro lines probably helps.

It's in a DUNKIN DONUTS CENTRE. That sounds unimaginably exciting. Is this a land where donuts reign supreme???

I would imagine (going by the large FOR FAMILIES banner on the placeholder website) that this is going for a different audience from the likes of the late Botcon. Whether there is a family audience for a multi-brand event, I don't know. Do kids even pay attention to which company makes their toys? I never noticed when I was a kid but is this generation different? -Ralph

Yeah. But the whole calling it a 'con' and the taking the Botcon stuff so they could specifically do this (otherwise they'd surely run this alongside official fan events) would point at it being more? I dunno.
I assume they want something like D23, the Disney expo. A Hasbro expo. But Hasbro only really has two brands people care about, and a lot of they dont, with not much crossover between them.

Who knows. It may seem daft but then remember how daft Marvel Studios looked before they put their Iron Man film out. It was generally accepted at the time that other studios had the more desireable Marvel characters (Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four etc) so their output was not expected to take off the way it did out of the gate. Nor did their idea of stringing disparate properties (which appeared to be z-list IP at times) into a 'cinematic universe' look in anyway like it would be the phenomenon it became. So it is possible Hasbro's attempt to create a 'shared universe' via events such as Hascon may take off and five years from now it seems obvious it was always going to work. You never know. Personally, I would hedge my bets it isn't quite going to work. You can't create a phenomenon by aping what others did before you. That rarely works.

I think the good Doctor has highlighted the key word there, families. This sounds far more like the kind of thing the BBC are doing with Doctor Who these days, those huge, highly commercialised conveyor belt experiences.
Fans meanwhile will quietly get on with their own thing. Funny to think people may come to lament Botcon's passing. If this proves to be the future of the official Transformers convention then it'll be a shame if it's diluted by being mixed with other brands.

Oh theres already lamenting. People may not care for FP, but theres a hardcore thats probably more than AA ever got that have been most years since the 90s.
Maybe the way thing are going this makes sense have unofficial conventions for the fans while Hasbro runs more professional for family expo type events. But personally I'll miss the odd hybrid of officially licensed event mixed with a 1000+ attendee old school meet up.

What hasbro's intentions are, are completely moot though, if no one goes. For FP's botcon, a trip with the family wasn't that much less than a trip to disney world. Maybe because I have no money, and also never got to go on family trips as a kid (thus the concept is kinda alien to me, gathering up the whole family just to go some where with no real purpose other than to go?), but I kinda have a hard time accepting people just gathering up all the kids to attend a glorified toy show on the other side of the continent, over something like the afore mentioned Disney World.
Whether intentional or not, the fandom will view this as taking the place of Botcon. And cancelling Botcon and putting this in it's place really seems like Hasbro's expecting the TF fans to carry this convention until it finds it's own footing.
This goes beyond whether I personally like this concept or not. I just literally don't think fandom works the way Hasbro needs it to, for this con to be successful.

Okay, so apparently the rumors are that there won't be a dealer's room. I GOT to take that with a mountain of salt, because conventions literally exist because of dealers rooms. No dealers room and you're con is stillborn. It's the social center. It's where everyone goes when you're between panels. Or during one you don't care about. It's even the primary draw for many people. It's the heart and pulse of the con. It's where you meet people you otherwise probably wouldn't. And with a property based trade show like this, how can you expect people to be excited about your properties if they cannot purchase items from it's rich history (even if hasbro directly offered their normal TRU/Walmart ready stock)?
And with their likely focus on kids and family over fans, that really becomes even more important? So what, do they expect boys and girls ages 8-12 to enjoy sitting for hours at a time in panels about boring adults just talking about movies they can't see yet, while looking at toys (or projected pictures of toys) they can't buy yet? "Mommy! Mommy! Buy me that in six to eight months!"
That's got to be a rumor started by a bitter TF fan. I can't believe hasbro would be so stupid as to not allow their toys to be sold at their toy show.

I dont think its a rumour so much as the press release makes no mention of a dealer room. Which doesnt mean there wont be one.
Personally I can how it could go either way. If Hasbro are trying to do a convention then there should be one (I did go to a Firefly convention that didn't have any dealers and it was incredibly odd, not fun), if Hasbro are doing a trade show thats open to the public with added panels, then its all about new shiney things and the public area will be the display area which depending on how any lines they plan to incorporate could be pretty large. There would also be an area to buy the exclusives and likely be a Hasbro store set up too. The only time Hasbro set up shop was 2007 which was also held in Rhode Island so this make sense they'd do it again.
Anyway, unless Hasbro actively stop it dealers will just set up room to room trading as usual which if often the best place to buy from. Or as some 3P people have done setup in a hotel and building near the convention.
You're probably right that they expect Botcon attendees to swap over to it, hence the axing of Botcon, but I also think Hasbro probably will get enough people coming over to it to make it work. For one thing the location is perfect, even if its only chosen because its where Hasbro is located its still within a 6 hour drive of a very large population. Anyone between New York and Boston can easily head there Saturday morning and back Sunday evening so its just one night stay. And its not just TF fans. MLP has a film out a month later apparently so I can see a lot of promotion for ithat.
Though apparently (again) one of the largest fan MLP cons is happening the same weekend. So it could be interesting to see how that plays out.
