Made it ten issues into the Spider-Man Alien Costume Saga before admitting defeat and skipping ahead to the key event issues. I'm afraid I've never been much of a Spider-Man reader. Martin No, Martin, no! -Ralph it saddened me too. :-( Martin did you read the Marvel Team Up stories? Most of them are Avengers or X-Men related.

I read the Captain Marvel and Starfox team-ups. I will probably read the X-Men team-ups today.
Black Cat lightens things up a bit, but I fall asleep whenever Peter Parker starts telling me about his money worries or love life or relationship with Aunt May or Flash Thompson or Harry Osborne or whoever.
And the villains are mostly second-rate.

But it's the @*@&@*@â‚©*@ alien costume saga!!! Yes, but it doesn't require two thick volumes equivalent to 40 regular issues of a comic to tell the story of how it tries to take him over and is driven away by loud church bells. Twenty issues before Peter takes Reed Richards up on the offer he made right to the start to do a scientific analysis of the costume. Then another twenty issues before it breaks out of the Baxter Building and attacks him and gets driven off by church bells. Lotta lotta boring filler in between stuff. Martin

Was always a big Spider-Man fan however Martin does have a point about the Alien Costume Saga. There is a bit of filler in there, but you can clearly see they are struggling with what to do with the costume. While I liked the look of it, the fact it upped Spider-Man's power levels was a bad idea. Also billing it as the Alien Costume saga is a tad misrepresenting the actual title at the time, as that was just a sub-plot. An interesting one at times, but seldom the main thrust.
I will say though that black costume is the business, was disappointed he went back to the red and black duds (NOT BLUE, BLACK).

I like Spider-Man. I just find Peter Parker annoying/boring. The only incarnation of Peter Parker I find likeable as a person is the MCU chap. All the other incarnations spend too much time moaning, even if only in thought balloons.
Though I gather that Peter Parker's 'normal' problems are apparently what made Spider-Man such a popular character, I find it a turn-off. Give me eccentric billionaires and aliens in disguise any day.
What I don't get about the alien costume is, if it could take on the appearance of normal clothes, why couldn't it take on the appearance of the traditional red-and-blue/black Spidey costume?

You are aware in recent years Peter has become and then stopped being an eccentric billionaire? No. Martin Well he did. Then of course the reset button was hit. It all kicked off as a result of the Superior Spider-Man series. Might be more up your street. Alternatively there is of course the greatest Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099.

No. But you've got me wondering now about trying some Peter David. Have his first two Hulk Visionaries, which would need some comics to get Martin from where Mantlo left off. Also have X-Factor epic 7....
