After reading the first volume of Walt FF I'm now half-way through Vol. 2 of Miller Daredevil. Quite a contrast! Stories are very good but somewhat lacking in joy, and I'm still struggling to find a reason to like the hero other than how heroic he is.

Daredevil isn't a title to read if you want to be filled with joy.

Miller's run on Daredevil is rather grim stuff. I rather like it, but it isn't a happy story by any means. It is hard to imagine a bigger contrast between that and Walt's Thor I have to say.

The brief Karl Kesel run before it was cancelled and came back under Kevin Smith is also a nice fun run.

Martin left with the remaining 2 Miller Daredevil Visionarues + Born Again and the Simonson FF volumes some of which he'd already read in a Death's Head trade. Finished the first of the three Daredevil books (Miller Visionaries Vol. 2). I have to admit I found that a bit of a slog. High quality stuff, but lacking in fun. Looking forward to getting back to FF with Simonson Vol.s 2 and 3. Martin

Finished Simonson FF. Wonderfully bonkers.
Back to Daredevil now. They will not defeat me with their brooding pessimism!

Finished Daredevil at last!
I have to say I found Miller Volumes 1-3 the very opposite of unputdownable. Sure, he knows how to compose text for the page of a comic, you can't deny that, but where's the vital ingredient that makes me interested in the characters? Over the course of these books Matt Murdock goes from too-noble-to-be-true to a quite unpleasant fellow over that distasteful master relationship with his fiancée. I couldn't find anything to like in him or Elektra to make me care what happened to either of them.
But in 'Born Again', everything seemed to click. By taking everything away from him, Miller made him a sympathetic character at last. I liked this book a lot.

The issue where Matt fights the fake Daredevil is one of my very favourite comics. Got a floppy copy here somewhere.

Mostly because it is a story which retains hope in a way that most of Miller's output doesn't. It is great stuff. Karl

So what shall we get him to read next?

Martin has read (from memory) most X-Men and Avengers from the 80s as well as Miller Daredevil, Simonson FF, Simonson Thor & Claremont New Mutants.

Please bear in mind what I've enjoyed (Simonson, Claremont) and what I haven't (Daredevil + post-1990s stuff).
Andy (I think) recommended Excalibur which you (I think) don't have but is coming to Epic Collections in the near future. That's been duly noted.
I've read very little Hulk. Anything good in that line?

ROM has some similarities in style with Budiansky Transformers, is tied into Marvel's 80's line and has lots of reading hence why I nominate it for Martin. It will also open your mind to Mantlotainment.

Have so far read Rom #1-3 and Hulk #269-271. So far enjoying Hulk more than Rom, as the stories are more imaginative and the characters more colourful. In Rom everyone so far has been very black-and-white and intensely serious. However, I shall keep reading. I see the similarities to Budiansky's story-telling in both series.
