The seventies Avengers run, the two were firm friends - proper buddy cop territory. It was one of the highlights of it,Phil will back me up on this. Phil does.

Wonder-Man doesn't deserve to share page-time with the magnificent Beast. Even his codename makes me scratch my head and ask "What were Marvel thinking when they created this guy?" Martin "let's stop DC doing a male version of Wonder Woman"

Wonder-Man doesn't deserve to share page-time with the magnificent Beast. Even his codename makes me scratch my head and ask "What were Marvel thinking when they created this guy?" Martin "let's stop DC doing a male version of Wonder Woman" Because that worked with Captain Marvel didn't it! Surely the only thinking behind Wonder Man is "we need a disposable one-shot character to use in one story then get rid of at the end, his entire gimmick is that he's a generic hero because that's the point, let's not spend too much time on this"

I do like how Wonder-Man played the villain in a film where the hero was played by one 'Arnold Schwarzburger'.
I choose to believe Brick Springhorn did the title song.

We sent Martin away on Saturday with the next Defenders Epic Collection, v7 Ashes to Ashes, which runs from 110-125.
He also left with Essential Defenders, the b&w reprints, v2 & 3 which contains 15-60 including the superb Gerber run.

Martin has enjoyed the Defenders Epic he's already read and wanted more. The new Epic leads on from that.
Both Andu and I endorse the Gerber run.
He has already had The Champions

I am perplexed by this one too as I rate the Defenders volume I lent Martin as poor and The Champions better than it.
But I agree with the general sentiment and Gerber Defenders is the best the title was.

Not as well as they deserve. I've been travelling around, which means pocket paperbacks (Jack Reacher) have been dominating my reading, and this week I was proof-reading ATAP for Andy. Plus, The A-Team. Still just halfway through the second Epic Collection, and haven't started on the Essentials. I apologise! I have a few weekends at home coming up and a week off work at the end of the month, so I expect to make great strides shortly. Martin

Nearly finished Essential Defenders Vol. 2, with Vol. 3 still awaiting.
Pretty good overall, though the Guardians of the Galaxy arc feels like something that could be done with any other team (e.g. FF or Avengers). I prefer Dr Strange and Defenders stories to focus on the sorts of occult threat to humanity that they are more uniquely suited to, rather than generic alien invasions.

Finished the Gerber Defenders run. It was decent enough, but I think I actually preferred the Epic Collections, where the threats were more occult than extraterrestrial, since that is the sort of story for which the likes of Doctor Strange and the Son of Satan are best suited. I don't think the black-and-white treatment helped - magical special effects need to be done in colour.
On the plus side, the extended plot where one good guy's brain got taken out and replaced by a bad guy's, but the bad guy's mind was magical transferred into a baby deer and a second good guy's mind put into the brain of the bad guy in the first good guy's body, while the second good guy is trying to come to terms with the fact that his wife's body is now permanently possessed by the Valkyrie, is wonderfully bonkers.
Can't honestly say I think Gerber's Defenders deserves to be referred to in the same list of greats as Stern's Avengers, Claremont's X-Men and Simonson's Thor, but it was still worth reading. Thanks, Phil!

It's MAD. The Nighthawk origin issue was one of the first Marvel comics I ever read aged 6 or 7!

The Nighthawk origin issue was one of the first Marvel comics I ever read aged 6 or 7! I'd never even heard of Nighthawk before. Does he ever get used in the Marvel universe outside the pages of The Defenders? I think I might vaguely have heard of Hellcat and the Son of Satan (not completely sure about that, though). Martin

Nighthwk is used here and there. His Marvel Universe version was unavailable for a long while due to the events of Defenders Epic 6. He has an alternate universe version as part of The Squadron Supreme, a team "homaging" certain DC characters who first appeared in The Avengers.
Hellcat was in The Avengers at around the time The Beast joins, she's definitely in The Serpent Crown trade.
Hellcat and Son of Satan appear in some West Coast Avengers stories.

Nighthawk never really caught on too much outside of The Defenders.
Shame, I liked him, but then I discovered the b&w reprints of The Defenders in back issues of Rampage in the early 90's in the Perth Indoor Market and fell in love with them.
