Martin left with Harry 20 On The High Rock
Future Shocks - which was next to Harry 20 on the shelf and I think might be up his alley
Essential Defenders 1 & 4 - the ones he hasn't read
Iron Fist Epic Collection

That's some fine reading.
Does the Future Shocks have the Moore/Gibbons Time Travel cop story in it?

Martin has been quiet, have we broken his mind with this latest set of comics?

Martin has been quiet, have we broken his mind with this latest set of comics? Finished Harry Twenty, a solid little graphic novella. I sure didn't see the bit with the android coming. Imagining what the story would have felt like to a reader who got it in 5-page chunks over a year or more. Half-way through Future Shocks. May try Iron Fist before returning to The Defenders. Nothing really grabs me about it at first glance, except for the list of creators on the front cover: Claremont / Byrne / Hama. Feel obliged to give it a fair try. Martin

Finished Future Shocks - all highly entertaining/amusing stuff, and impressed by the level of detail/care given to the artwork in what are essentially humour strips.
Also read the four-part Iron Fist origin. Doesn't really grab me so far, but interesting to see what sparked Larry Hama's Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow a few years later. I dunno, I normally complain when comics have too few words, but with martial arts I think words break the flow of the action. G.I. Joe's 'Silent Interlude' and 'Hush Job' are the only stories where a comic has made me feel like I'm watching martial arts sequences flow properly.

Martin Iron Fist is OK to start with but really gets going when Byrne/Claremont turn up.

Finished Epic Iron Fist. Learnt a few things, including that second-person narration does not work, especially when you keep being told "You are Iron Fist," a character you really don't care about. Highlights were the regular cameos by more charismatic Marvel characters like Iron Man, Captain America and the X-Men who invariably have misunderstandings with Iron Fist that provide an excuse for them to fight.
The inside back cover of the book tells me to read Power Man & Iron Fist next. Having seen Power Man in Defenders, that's like suggesting I sprinkle a condiment I don't care for onto a food I don't care for, which I suppose would enable me to make just a single trip to the kitchen bin.
Never mind! I enjoyed the 2000AD books Phil gave me, and I have two Essential volumes of Defenders still to read, which I know I will enjoy.

Oh dear. Andu and I both enjoyed that. One of my niggles about Iron Fist is the way the writer keeps trying to sound clever by naming the moves Iron Fist uses, such as Lion Punch, Rabbit Headbutt, Goldfish Kick and Penguin Elbow, which are accompanied by generic pictures of kicks and punches, and give the reader no useful information whatsoever. It contrasts sharply with the Lee Child novels I was reading at the same time, where the author helpfully tells me what part of the bad guy's anatomy Reacher hits with what part of his body, how hard, his thinking behind it and what damage it does. Giving it a silly animal name would add nothing to the narrative. Martin

The internet tells me the bones in a penguin's elbows are almost fused. I suspect someone might have been having a laugh when they taught Iron Fist that one.

The internet tells me the bones in a penguin's elbows are almost fused. I suspect someone might have been having a laugh when they taught Iron Fist that one. I said "such as", not "including". The examples I gave may not have actually appeared in the script... and my memory is hazy as to whether there were any Kung-Fu Penguins. Edit: I can't believe you're nitpicking my Penguin Elbow but letting Goldfish Kick pass without comment. Martin
