It isn't working for me; the only parts which stand out and sound like part of a memorable theme are the ones homaging the original at the beginning and end. The main bit is perfectly competent, but not remotely iconic.
Not that I think it matters that much; Voyager had a great theme and beautiful opening credits. But it was still Voyager.

Is Discovery dumping all at once, or is it an episode a week?

Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh. Avoid any reports of Frakes at a recent con. I accidentally clicked on half asleep and there was a big Discovery spoiler from the episode he directed. Said spoiler also made me sigh. Hopefully it is better in context.

Apparently Discovery has been rating TV-MA (the equivalent of an 18) and they're not letting anyone review it in advance.
Hold onto your seat, captain!

Hnnnn.
Not allowing critics to screen it in advance is *always* a bad sign.

I thought it had become more common with spoiler concerns on shows like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.
Or am I just imagining that?

You are not. That was the statement re: spoilers stated though amongst all the various promo pieces being pumped out for the show I can't find the source.
I've never seen a show which has had so much online hate directed at it before it starts. This puzzles me.

Hnnnn. Not allowing critics to screen it in advance is *always* a bad sign. When it comes to feature films, that is often the case. I don't know if this 'rule' applies to TV shows though as I don't watch many of them. -Ralph

Personally I like to avoid spoilers of new things before they are released anyway.

Which can be taken to mean the pilot has a big event/reveal that they dont want spoiling.
Kinda depressing to see people jump to the alternative conclusion, which may turn out ot be true, but as Ralph said the level of negativity towards the show is bit excessive.

Other than the ship design and the backstage drama, I've not been the least bit negative about the show itself.
It's just that "won't screen for critics" is nine times out of ten code for them not having faith in their product. It always kinda breaks my heart when that happens to something I'm looking forward to. Not that I'll ever get to see discovery, anyway.
I also don't buy the spoiler thing, because they screen movies with major spoilers all the time. And as a series premier, everything is a spoiler because everything is new. I mean, non-disclosure agreements are a thing. And most professional critics generally have enough class and wherewithal to not spoil major plot points. I mean there are always exceptions (Ebert and Rouper went on Leno and intentionally spoiled everything for The Village the night before it opened. So yeah, there are shitty exceptions), but usually most professional critics respect it.

Yeah, I mean it's different. With existing shows, it's because there's a huge existing audience who will get really pissed if huge spoilers are revealed.
With new shows, you need as much publicity as possible. The entire point about pre-screenings for critics is to get people saying "wow this is great, watch this!"
At the least, it won't be as bad as Star Trek: Renegades!

Star Trek is an entertainment property that has been going since 1966 and has worldwide recognition. While far from its peak (arguably circa 1996) it is still well known enough in the general population that I doubt whether some reviews before it airs will make any difference whatever they say. Streaming shows are available in a different way from TV network shows which operate on a 'aired once then wait for a repeat' procedure. Less pressure on opening night figures/reviews.
What I would say though is that there appears to be little publicity for the show in the UK outwith the fan bubble/SF press/SF websites. Many folk I've spoken to only know there is a new show because I told them.
In any event we will see what the show is like in 7/8 days depending where folk live.

Many folk I've spoken to only know there is a new show because I told them. There's an older person at work who is a big Trek fan to the extent that they'd covered their desk in little Starfleet insignias. She had no idea there was a new show until I told her the other week!

(And that conversation was pretty much: "There's a new show coming" "OH!!" "It's a prequel" "Oh "

Won't be watching any Discovery until early-mid October due to house moving so will be checking out of this thread until then to avoid any spoilers or opinions that may sway my initial viewing.

Oh, I should do the same - unless we could have a separate thread for Discovery, at least for the time being, so we can still appreciate other Trek?
