This is excellent news. Star Trek's natural home is in a TV format and enough time has passed since it was last airing new episodes (2005) for a fresh new take. Sifting through the PR bumf I am also glad to see it will feature new characters.
Fabulous. Very happy. Roll on 2017.

Is Kurtzman the one that got dropped from the new film and thinks 911 was an inside job and basically played out his theory in the last Trek film? Or the other one?
To be honest neither fill me with confidence, but yay Star Trek.

A new TV series is great news. I agree it's time. But what form will it take? What universe? The Next Gen universe, or movie universe? Which would we rather? Will the male characters wear trousers of strange futuristic miniskirts?

I will be very surprised if it is not in the current movie alternate timeline or a complete reboot. We will see. I doubt it's much beyond initial pitch/early pre-production at this stage.

I think they should just jump forward a few centuries and then it can be new while still having some continuity but not be tied down. Either way I hope it means all those books that Ralph reads are swept away into dust. Or relagated to fan fiction. Like ST V was in Kirk's autobiography.

There's nothing in the press release stating when/where the series is set. Anything else is just speculation touted as 'fact' by the internet.

The only thing that appears clear is that there are two sets of rights in play. If CBS want to use elements of the new movies they would have to ask nicely/pay money, whereas anything from Star Trek or it's TV Spinoffs they can apparently freely use. Whether they are thinking of ponying up for stuff from the recent films we have no idea at this stage. It is over a year away, things will become clear in due course I am sure.

Original series for me. Nothing against the movies, but any series set there not on the Eneterprise might as well just be a prequel in the original timeline so whats the point of jumping through movie hoops.

Interesting to see what happens with the show.
Still early days yet, so the rampant speculation is quite amusing.

Definitely. Nothing really said yet other than "New show coming".
Given DC's doubling up of Flashes in Movie and TV universe I can see them going down the route of separate continuities in the TV vs Movie outputs. Not a bad thing really I think given that the Movies are very much razzle dazzle (good in small doses), but a TV show needs more... meat?
It damn well better have the Hugh Borgs in it though. And the Irish farmers. And a starship's sweet spot!

Things I want to see in Star Trek:
•Ellen DeGenerous as a Romulan Commander •Jason Alexander as a Klingon •Mel Brooks as a Ferengi •John Cena or Dwayne Johnson also as Ferengi •Barring her being a romulan, then Ellen in a Guinan type role

Meyer is a good writer, both inside and outside of Star Trek. So his addition to the team is a good thing.

In other news I see that The Internet has declared what the premise of the new TV show is. So I checked startrek.com and could see no press release so checked the originator of the source which as usual with internet bullshit was one guy on a website saying his unknown mate had told him so.
Internet: learn critical thinking! Check your sources! You have in your hand magic devices that can allow you to do this in just a few minutes!
