If it helps I wasn't overwhelmed by it. Thanks, yes, it does help. It mean it can be you rather than Ralph who's the one who's wrong on this occasion. Martin

I retaliate by completely destroying the car that you're driving, all except for you, your driver's seat and the steering wheel in your hands, which are apparently indestructible. Martin

Now I will admit I am not a fan of the cult of Del Toro but The Shape of Water has been getting such good reviews I thought I would give it a whirl. Fabulous cast wasted in a puddle of urine. Devoid of tension or charm. The romance between the lead character and the aquathing doesn't convince for a moment as hee haw had been done to give the latter much character. There is also a badly misjudged scene which resorts to the cliche of a disabled character dreaming that their disability has gone. I thought we had got past that kind of demeaning nonsense in 2018 but apparently not. Made me angry! I can see what the intent was and I very much doubt any offence was meant but it really needed someone on the production to say: 'No. Get that across in a different way'. There is a case here that actually casting a mute actor was what the film needed.
A shame. Good idea for a story, fabulous cast putting it good work but it just doesn't work. The constant twee 'you will feel emotion now' approach to the score also drags it down somewhat.
Oh well!

1. Black Panther - genuinely loved this. It isn't perfect, but then, nothing outside of the Platonian Realm of Forms ever is. But it is one of my favourite Marvel Studios movies. It had some wonderfully over-the-top action sequences, a very strong cast, and a really good music score. The design work was absolutely stunning. There was a unity to the Wakandan style which ran through everything - clothing, architecture, technology, which told so much about the setting without stopping for exposition. Gorgeous design work, with a surety and deftness that I don't think they've really managed since Thor's Asgard. But what really lifts this film is it's villain. If a man is defined by his enemies, then Black Panther is well served. The villain has fantastic screen presence, and more importantly - has a point. This isn't a film with some demented loonie wanting to destroy the universe, blow up a planet, or prove that he is the super-man because his daddy was mean to him or whatever folk like Ronan are supposed to want. Having a character who has justification to be angry about something - and making how he responds to that the dividing line between hero and villain is much more interesting than many of the Marvel villains. (Actually, it occured to me that for all some folk talk about the Marvel films as having a "takes place in a realistic world" thing - this is the first Marvel film since Winter Soldier that actually feels like it takes place in anything approaching a realistic world).
Loved it. Going to be interesting to see how the rest of this years superhero movies stack up against this. (Assuming I can be motivated to go and see them all).

1. Black Panther Enjoyed this a lot; fantastic design work, good performances, compelling villain. There are MCU movies I have enjoyed more, but not many (Winter Soldier remains at #1).

1 - Event Horizon - first jaunt to the big screen was to see this 1997 classic. A taught horror film in space with some fantastic design work - a better Hellraiser in space film than Hellraiser: Bloodline.

In 35mm!!!
It will not be beaten as the cinematic event of the year. Slightly sobering that the last time I saw it at the cinema was when it came out...21 years ago.

I forgot I saw The Greatest Showman - right at the start of the year. The only part I didn't like was that it felt as though it must be so far removed from the actual events I kind of wish they had just made up a story. Pitch Perfect 3 Paddington 2 Darkest Hour Molly's Game Jumanjii 2 Maze Runner: Black Panther - Not quite what I expected. Still very very good. I think far more deserving of the plaudits than Wonder Woman was after you strip away the cultral importance element. Red Sparrow (Imax) - Probably doesnt deserve the negativeity its getting. Its nothing amazing, but I dont think its terrible. Its marketing (from what I can tell, Ive yet to see any)is ridiculously wide of the mark. Black Panther (Imax) - Imax really didn't add anything, well I guess it made it migger and brighter and obviously the ound was incredible, but it (and Red Sparrow) were both in 2D which made the experience so much more enjoyable. After 2 viewing I am left with some thoughts though. - On a practical level the ritual combat element of Wakandan society seems like an impractcal way to maintain a stable leadership. Even if the vast majority of new Kings dont have to face combat because the tribes and family treat it as a formality surely the events similar to the ones in this film play out a bit to often for comfort. - On a filmaking level, I can't help but wonder what the response would be to a fictional African nation with similar rituals in a film made by a prodominantly white creative team and cast. Maybe Im just projecting my own weirdness with the concept as I've seen no mention of it anywhere, or maybe its because the film does sort of address it indirectly. - On second viewing it went quicker. First time around somewhere in the middle I felt like it was getting a bit bogged down, second time no such issue. - Spoiler Surprised and a bit sad to see Klaue done away with, Serkis was much more enjoyable in the role than he was in Ultron.

The Greatest Showman Pitch Perfect 3 Paddington 2 Darkest Hour Molly's Game Jumanjii 2 Maze Runner Black Panther Red Sparrow (Imax) Black Panther (Imax) Game Night - Surprisingly funny. Ready Player One - Saw the advance screening last night. A lot of fun and I can imagine rewatching it more than once just trying to catch all the easter eggs, reference and homages. It does try to have its cake and eat it though as it simultaneously tries to be a kids action film in the style of ET, Goonies and the like while also referencing as many of them as possible. The result is a film that somewhat lack an identity of its own so Im curious to see if kids of today find something to latch on to that isn't nabbed from elsewhere. In the same vein it, with all the nostalgia and stuff going on it seems as though its very much aimed at adults. Admittedly some of the easter eggs are right up to date so all ages will probably get something, but target audience I'd say is 20-40, but the film itself is still structurally a kids film. So for adults its fun but relatively low stakes. And for the kids some to a lot of the references which it spends so much time on may be meaningless. Which makes it sound like I wasn't impressed, but I was. Its very good, I mean its Spielberg, its just lightweight Spielberg.

I cannot say anything more until Ralph sees it tomorrow. I do however demand Martin sees it as a counterpoint.

How on earth can you call it relaxing when the Disciples were on such an endless roller coaster of abrupt personality changes every five seconds??

Nice use of surround sound of environmental effects. Quiet score. Lots of long slow shots of landscapes. Gentle scenes where not much happens. Lots of slow staring and smiling.
Chilled me out.
It's only really Peter who has sudden personality changes but one of my favourite actors was playing him so I let it go.

1. Molly's Game 2. Black Panther 3. The Post 4. Tomb Raider 5. Darkest Hour 6. Pacific Rim Uprising (better than the first one)7. The Commuter The conceit of the Pacific Rim series seems to be that it is more effective to fight monsters with giant robots than with missiles, which is difficult for me to get my head round, particularly as it seems that the only way they could kill the big monster in this film was by using a giant robot as a missile. Do jets and missiles not exist in this universe? Martin

Pacific Rim 2: no redeeming features of any kind. My expectations were low but they were not met. Possibly one of the shittest films I have ever seen in a cinema.
