What else is coming up this month that is worth a watch? 1. Molly's Game (one for any West Wing fans, i.e. me)A much better start to the year than last year's Assassin's Creed. As for January, I'm also quite looking forward to 'The Post'. Martin

1. Molly's Game 2. Darkest Hour (quite good for the most part, then very good towards the end - did the scene on the underground really happen though, I wonder?)

A good start to the year for me.
First up - Pitch Perfect 3 - okay not a great start but Im fond of this series, this really should have been the second film, the second one essentially repeated the first film but at the world championships instead of the nationals.
Paddington 2 - Great fun, always just edges away when it gets to close to childish slapstick. Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleason really go fir it.
Darkest Hour - Yeah I wondered about that scene too. A part of me wants to see a supercut of this and Dunkirk. Dunkirk had the 1 hour, 1 day and 1 week timeframe. This would add the 1 month timeframe.
Molly's Game - Very good but felt a bit less Sorkiny than most of his scripts.
Jumanjii 2 - Although it would have made almost no difference to the film, I am so glad this was made as a sequel rather than a reboot. Great performances all around. My only issue with the film is Kevin Hart. The other 3 leads play against type to great effect (especially Jack Black) but Hart is playing exactly the same role he always plays. More annoyingly he also doesn't seem to be playing the same character as Highschool Fridge. He's still entertaining but stood out as not quite fitting.

I also think Jack Black's final words to the NPC before returning to the real world, "Later, dude," didn't sound like something Bethany would say. But that aside, it's a damn entertaining film, which I've now watched twice, and it stood up better than 'Thor: Ragnarok' did to a rapid second cinema viewing. I haven't seen the original 'Jumanji'. Is it as good as this one? Martin

Jumanji is a game Ralph would not win.
Haven't seen the first one in years but I remember watching again years afoerst seeing it at the cinema and thinking it was a film that had something to it but was handicapped by being a kid's film.
Really should get sorted on seeing the new one.

Jumanji is a game Ralph would not win. That statement is truer than you know, if you haven't seen the new film! (Weakness: Cake) I shall keep an eye out for the original the next time it's on the telly. Martin

'The Post' was pish and bizarrely seemed to think it was a prequel to the film 'All the President's men' (yes, really) rather than telling it's story properly. A real head scratcher. -Ralph {Spoiler}Early on, we see a character walk in front of a Robert Redford film poster and various directorial callbacks to ATPM. The final scene (which has nothing to do with the rest of the film) is the break-in at The Watergate Building. It does everything but have 'TO BE CONTINUED IN 'ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN' at the end!!!

Jumanji if you want some light good fun. If you want something heavier, go Mollys Game.

I would agree, Molly's Game is not top rank Sorkin, but is still Sorkin.
Jumanjii 2 is top rank popcorn fantasy adventure (with added Amy Pond points), but is still just that.
Bit of a toss up really. But Mollys Game has already vanished from cinema here so if its still playing near you I'd get to it, Jumanjii will probably be on for longer.

Maze Runner: The Third One. - Eh not bad, but was generally predictable and as with The hunger Games, the main character had very little effect on the story. He does something half way through that has an impact later on, but frankly its something anyone could have done (admittedly probably less easily) otherwise hes just running around being ineffective while other people save the day.

The Commuter was fun in 4DX. The 4DX thing is of course a daft gimmick but moving seats for a film 90% set on a moving train does actually work! So the lesson is that the format is only worthwhile for public transport based films.
