Much as I love Ultra Magnus as a character - all of them, the "G1" version, the IDW, the Animated version... As a toy I am going to have to give this one to Galvatron. He is far more fun to play with, has a fun cannon mode, and a brilliant gun mode. I love the rounded look of gun mode, it has a bit of a retro feel to it - very much a "ray-gun" rather than a "particle bolter" or any of that newfangled science talk. The lock for the sliding chest also makes a really good sight both in its "proper" position, and if you pop it loose and fold it up like it has a little screen in it.
Ultra Magnus is a good idea for a toy, but really it wasn't something that the Diaclone line managed to realise terribly well. The same basic principle underlies later things in several unrelated toylines, and almost all of them did it better than the Powered Convoy had managed. (But then, someone had to go first and discover the pitfalls I guess).

Exactly - a bulbous ray-gun. Just the way that they used to make them in the days that Buck Rogers had a rocket belt and Flash Gordon flew in rocket ships that made an "errrrrrr.errrrrrrr.errrrrrrr.errrrrr" noise. A classic of design.
Also, Galvatron is a much better gun than you give it credit for - for a start it is better balanced than Megatron or Shockwave (a lot of the weight being behind the wrist so that it is much easier to keep on target if you have to wield it with one hand).

I raise the stakes by asking if you have noticed the little seat on Ultra Magnus' chest? His chest piece comes off and flies by itself. It has air intakes on either side, wings and a seat scaled to the truck cab seats. Like Remans it was there all the time! The head clips onto the top of that for guns, doesn't it? No it doesn't.
