Okay, so I'm going to try doing this based purely on the look of the toys in the catalogues alone... although I'll probably fail.
Right off the bat (no I don't have anyone on my mind) it's not going to be Rewind and Eject - the robot modes just aren't as interesting-looking as Frenzy/Rumble (don't tell the conjunx!). Also (and I'm already going off-mission here) when I finally got hold of Eject from the SDCC reissue it just wasn't as good to transform as the original tape-bots.
That leaves us with the three animal cassettes - and let's face it, 'bots with animal "main" modes are always going to be better. Ramhorn and Steeljaw are both great looking toys - from the side. When you actually see them face on they're disappointingly thin. Which is no surprise for something that turns into a cassette, but still - you don't get the sense of power from either that the characters demand (and that they avoided with Ravage by making him a spy).
So that leaves us with Ratbat. Avoiding the thin-ness issue by making him unfold into a winged creature solves that problem, and hey, he's a purple bat. That was always going to win with me before his Marvel depiction - which is just the icing on the cake, really. The batty rat it is!

Perfectly fine to like what someone has done with the character even if the original toy isn't that good! Also (and I'm already going off-mission here) when I finally got hold of Eject from the SDCC reissue it just wasn't as good to transform as the original tape-bots. Here is one of their biggest problems: they do invite direct comparison with Rumble & Frenzy! That leaves us with the three animal cassettes - and let's face it, 'bots with animal "main" modes are always going to be better. Trypticon wants to know why you voted Metroplex last week! Yep. It's the only possible choice. Sorry Trypticon, much as I love you... you're not Metroplex.

The fact that Roberts has written Rewind so well on top of that was a bonus. Trypticon wants to know why you voted Metroplex last week! Because I'm nothing if not not always true to myself! :-P

An interesting one this. I've never actually seen any of these in person. If I was factoring in the comics personality then it'd be an easy win for Ratbat (and I love his Masterpiece version). However, going purely by the catalogue picture, I'm mostly drawn to Ramhorn, so if I was picking one up off the shelves back in the day, then it'd probably be him.

VOTE FANG NOT HORN!

I have read the arguments, and my vote remains with Steeljaw. I haven't owned him so I don't know if he is good to play with or not, but I have owned Ratbat and thought he was poor compared to the other Deceps, with his tiny head and floppy ears, so I cannot vote for him.
Steeljaw and Ramhorn are the only two possible candidates for my vote, and it remains with Steeljaw because of Ravage.
Ravage is the almost undetectable spy/saboteur. Steeljaw is the ultimate tracker. Cat vs. cat. Therefore, Steeljaw is the most worthy addition to the TF line-up of these five offerings.

Jumping way ahead a bit, but when we get to the 1988 cassettes, will we be voting for the individual tapes or combiner duos separately?
And a more important question - why didn't they muddle up Rewind & Ejects colours in the cartoon just to keep THAT theme going?

I'd say combiner pair in the main poll, as that's the complete toy as it was sold, vote on individuals in the extras, but up to Phil at the end of the day. Hopefully it won't result in an illegal poll.

I's say they came up with the Cyclonus thing for that year instead, but I've never seen where the contention or confusion was there.

In theory Ratbat can be beaten.....
... but only if we break the record number of voters in one of these polls!

Im kind of stumped on this one. While I now agree Eject and Rewind are not as good as Rumble and Frenzy I got Rewind and Steeljaw on the same day I got Frenzy and Ratbat from a market stall in the early 90s. I have far more memory of playing with Rewind than I do Frenzy. I think maybe the arms are better for me.
Rat Bat was kind of fun, but mostly I remember liking him because it was easy to keep him standing thanks to his wings. Steeljaw was always fun. Maybe its because I didn't have ramhorn till so much later but I do remember thinking he might have been better than Steeljaw when I poured over the US catalogue I owned thanks to Broadside.
So, yeah. Stumped, but as I seem to be in the anyone but Ratbat camp it really doesnt appear to matter.
And now looking at images of them I do think they nailed flat Rhino more than flat Lion.

In the end I voted Steeljaw - he's a lion cassette, and I have a greater affection for felines than for bats - and I think he is one of the most enjoyable toys of this batch to fiddle about with.
