Probably ought to give some chronology for the period of reissues we're talking about here. We've already had Classics in Europe and Japanese reissues of Dinobots, Aerialbots and Trainbots. We believe both of these have links to the Chinese run of Transformers in the late 80s/early 90s as do the moulds reued in G2. The modern round of reissues starts in 2000 with a straight reissue of 1 Convoy <SNIP> After that it gets quiet until the Wal*Mart rereleases start Nice round up. Though some of the Platinums probably deserve a mention prior to the Walmart reissues.

No contest, NY Prime.
In reality it really should be. That Megatron set is incredibly impressive, but no Action Master, no contest.

Same. It had a pinkish tinge to the paint on the diecast chest which now makes it an interesting variant.
Although the 25th anniversary release I am thinking of came with a comic and voicebox rather than dvd.

I will give the learned minds of Havant and Cardiff an opportunity to reply before revealing all. And telling you the answer *Looks at Martin's list* *Ponders for way too long* Nope, no idea. Putting out something that's been out before but with more content? You're not referring to Taskmaster moving from Dave to Channel 4 and getting a longer series or something?

that megatron set is beautiful but two new coloured ops in one box is fantastic too. normally i'd vote megatron over prime any day but this time prime does the job.

How do you mean?
I assume you're ok with the idea of voting on New Year Convoy vs Megatron?
Megatron's Japanese ID number is 16 Convoy's Japanese ID number is 1
So comparing them, effectively what we're doing in the vote, that's 16 to 1
which sound very much like the title of the Channel 4 quiz show 15 to 1

I deeply regret not buying New Year Convoy with his anime windows and AM chum. It's one of the reasons I got the anime missing link this year.
BUT, and it's a very BIG BUT, first reissue of Megatron, all the western bits, all the Japanese bits, an additional launcher never previously seen on a Tramsformer? This was nearly Holy Grail territory at the time. The "first all" in Megatron - others follow in Transformers Collection and Encore - makes this a special release for me.

Phil's position may have been defensible if he'd correctly prophesied the poll result and it was 15-1.
But then he went and voted for Megatron.

Now, I made some errors with these two releases. In that I didn’t get either of them.
Convoy I didn’t get for the same reason I don’t get any reissue Convoy/Optimus Primes - I still have my original that I got for my 7th birthday, which is therefore by default the best. And I have Action Master Prime from back in the day. Therefore, except for the Matrix, this was kind of redundant to me. Although it is a very nice set, and had I had more monies at the time I would’ve gone for it.
Megatron I likewise didn’t bother with because I still have my original. Forgetting of course that it’s kind of battered and the arms have fallen off thanks to my brothers (not the reason we no longer speak, but it doesn’t help in their favour). And not paying attention at the time and realising that it actually fires. Which, actually, therefore to me makes this the more desirable set.
Which makes the question of which is the better one much more difficult. The original Prime/Convoy is, as already determined, the best Transformer of all time. But that Megatron set is very very nice. If I saw them on shelves and had to pick one I’d be torn. And I think ultimately be disappointed with whatever I’d chosen…

Finishes tomorrow. As I suspected the pro Action Master lobby have swung this one .... Not for me. I voted Convoy just because 1984 Convoy/Prime is so much better a toy than Megatron (because of the trailer) and no amount of tweaks and extras are going to change that. Martin

So... I'm judging this purely on the "added value" of the package, not of the reissued toys themselves but of what the additional stuff adds to the reissued toy. For me, on those criteria has to be Megatron. The Convoy reissue is a good package in terms of "lots of ancillary stuff that comes with the toy" - it has some ancillary media, and comes with a second toy - not only that but it is a toy that hadn't been released in the domestic market before which is neat, but doesn't really do anything to enhance Convoy. He is basically the same as previously releases. I don't have this version, I have one of the other Convoy reissues (came with a Matrix charm/necklace/bag-dangler/whatever/-with-no-chain instead of the gubbins in this version, but I'm good with that and don't regret not having this version.
The Megatron by contrast is the most complete version of the toy to be released - it not only has all the accessories and features of the previous release of Megatron, but it also has the Diaclone accessories that hadn't been released with Megatron domestically before (they'd only been included with the Hasbro Megatron iirc). Making it a kind of Complete Selection Megatron... So yes, as a reissue of the original toys I think the Megatron is the better package as it is a more complete version than was previously available before.

Here's the stock from the original western Megatron: Couple of features need drawing attention to which are unused: the hole in the top and the empty slot in the side. It's also worth mentioning the hole in the post to the right Here's the stock from 16-S, with a bullet The hole on the top matches the bullet, that's where it goes in. The slot now has a spring loaded trigger sticking out the side. Pull it back and it fires the bullet through the hole in the centre of the large peg. Since this forms part of the stand alone cannon, or can be mounted on the back of the gun barrel in robot mode, these both now can fire bullets
