I always find it fascinating looking at the catalogues. I've never lost that sense of anticipation and desire that looking at the groups of toys organised like that brings. That thought that, ooh, if I had those three I'd have ALL the 1988 targetmasters, or if I had those two I'd have the leader figures. The organisation of the groups is just as exciting as the toys themselves, and the catalogues are the pinnacle of that. That's the collecting bug. One is never enough, it's about the sets. Bring back catalogues! Or at least e-catalogues! Get a grip Hasbro! Do you remember that Botcon 2001 (?) Wreckers catalogue. That was exciting! |

I vote Buzzsaw, because he has more accessories than the others, his most impressive accessory being Soundwave.
Also note he's the only Spy Cassette who is actually a Spy according to his tech-specs.

I predicted you'd go that way based on the last top five poll. As usual, you are correct. All six are transformers icons, but Sideswipe takes it. Of those six, he was the first one I had, and still have. I love Sideswipe. Not because he's a sporty red car, but because he has an awesome robot mode and one of the best head designs of the whole of G1.

I wonder if part of Ravage's runaway success is that there's just the one, where the others have two variants? Ravage is a great character, but I don't think it's the best of the toys.
I have to agree on Sideswipe, it's a beautiful design in both modes. Feh to all this "but he's a NOBODY" whining we've seen ever since the MP was announced. There's a huge fiction-bias in certain elements of the fandom that ends up unfairly dismissing the design element of Transformers.

I voted Ratchet.
Sideswipe would be a close second. I just love the really alien look of Ratchet. Both of them and Mirage were all part of my Transformers collection back in the day.
Such a great looking toy.

Funnily enough, Sideswipe never even entered my thinking. It was between Hound and Mirage with third for Jazz. The vote fell to Mirage, because c'mon, it's me.
Sideswipe is nice, but not top three material.
None of my top three have official Masterpieces, either... hmm.

Bluestreak. Looks good in both modes, and of the six, his disguise mode is the only one that wouldn't attract attention on a city street. The others are al too conspicuous to be effective disguises in most circumstances. (And I really like the character.) Sideswipe was a childhood favourite would be my second choice, but he suffers from not having chrome weapons.

The loudest voices of a pretty vocal minority. The toy collector fanbase of Transformers in sheer numbers far outstrips the comic/cartoon centric fanbase. While the comic is still for me my favourite aspect of Transformers, they are an interpretation of the toys, so the toys are the source as it were. Hence why the whole FIRRIB/RIRFIB nonsense always annoyed me as there was no debate in my eyes. Andy |

It always annoyed me how underused Sideswipe was in the comics and cartoon. Yes, Jazz mostly made an impact on me as a young 'un for being "the cool one" (and having the transformation we all wanted to imitate in the playground after the cartoon first aired) but he's otherwise a bit of a nebulous character. And I agree, his G1 toy is not the best. Nice car mode, but the robot isn't up there with the Datsuns (in my opinion). United Jazz was great though, as was Alt/BT Meister. |

I thought that too, but having examined all the US cartoon episodes closely to write about them, beyond the initial three episodes, Jazz doesn't feature much at all. It just feels like he does. |

I'm another one who would have to say that my long-term loyalty to Transformers is very much about the "print media" aspect - and within that my first love will always be the Marvel comic. But when it comes down to it the secondary media are just that - secondary elements of a franchise that is first and foremost a children's toy line. So the toys must therefore take primacy as a source, over secondary sources. That said, I've voted Ratchet for two reasons. Firstly that he and Ironhide are genuinely my favourites of the 84 Autobot cars. They are the ones that properly look alien, with no pretence of being human - even down to not having a distinct human style head and instead having a core-block with limbs design. On top of that, both Budiansky and Furman managed to make Ratchet a genuinely great character - likeable, curious, loyal and capable of incredible courage. The sort of friend you would want in a tight spot. Karl |

The Kaptain has nailed everything I wanted to say right there. Fiction helps, and I want to vote for Ratchet because of all those reasons.
BUT!
Look at them!
Just look at them all!
They're all so perfectly gorgeous! Just by looking at that picture I want to vote for Mirage, Sideswipe and Bluestreak - look at how their colours pop! Jazz and Hound are probably the least interesting, just because the scan makes Hound blend into the background a little, and Jazz - as we are discovering - is just not as interesting a design as the others (do NOT leak this to my conjunx).
I should really vote for Ratchet - I love the Budiansky/Furman character, and that's my favourite mold of all the first year toys because it's so odd. But my previous two decisions were based on how they look in that photo, and... dammit. I can't decide. I'll have to mull this one over.
