So basically what you're saying is, you're going to vote for Sideswipe. Yes, yes I thought so.

Week 3: What is the best Robot Car on the 1984 UK catalogue? Oh wow... So SO nostalgic! I remember this image so clearly, from an early time of wonder, before I knew Prowl even existed! This image is all I had to go on. It filled me awe and possibility. Jazz... Looks great. And I feel he is a character that has never been well explored or developed. Ratchet... Brilliant, complex, alien. Sideswipe... a great toy. But for me, it has to be Mirage. The blue, the sleek race-car (even though I've never been 'into' cars)... he just looks... mysterious... with.a fascinating techspecs. Mirage has my vote. I had him as a kid, and he was SUPERB. But Jazz and Ratchet are so so close....

I was only 2 at the time didn't get to experience this first time round. First one I remember would be 1987 (I think) with the Headmasters.

I missed out on the Spy Cassette one which is a shame as Rumble & Ravage were my first Transformer toy(s). As hard as it would be to pick between the two, Ravage would have won as he was the reason I bought the pack in the first place. For some reason it was unique and very special to have a 'dog' Transformer when all previous ones (ie Robo Machines) were all 'people robots'. A shame he was a bit flat.
Now the choice is between Ratchet & Jazz. Ratchet, again was unique, plus he was an ambulance which was a nice modest vehicle that I liked (amongst all the sports cars). But Jazz has those really nice colours and stripes, plus he was in Man Of Iron. He also had that brilliant spot in one of the first commercials where the toy was transformed (in a way I can't describe here) so I may go for him. Perhaps I can vote for Ratchet in the next Autobot Cars catalogue (or is that cheating?)

Never seen that before. I asked Maz and his PMOP, Joyride and Getaway all had 1987 catalogues. Will have to check my Pretender Beast boxes when I find them. I have his one too. It came with Roadgrabber (Pretender Vehicle) which was a Woolworths exclusive if I remember right. I also have the 1989 UK catalogue if a scan is needed.

I love reading about the personal connections everyone has to these figures. This is a great thread. Don't worry, we'll be back to Ralph telling me why what I've done is wrong in 2 weeks time. The clever amongst you might be able to work out the problem and why my solution is a tad controversial. But it's my feature, my rules, and I can't see another way round it other than having a toy in a poll by itself!

Next week must be the strike planes, which leaves us with Optimus and Soundwave. Could we do them as a pair as they were the original leaders over here? No Megatron until Easter 85?

So basically what you're saying is, you're going to vote for Sideswipe. Yes, yes I thought so. Alas not. I'm actually veering towards Mirage - simply because he's front and centre, and has all that blue that stands out nicely. And also because of his appearance in Man of Iron, which oddly stuck with me more than Jazz - the star! - did. Still... mulling.

What I'm thinking is do the leaders as a 3, which bridges us onto the US catalogue, and then 1984 Autobots II group. The problem is if we did Op & Soundwave as a pair, which ideally I'd like to, where would we put Megatron? Similar problems exist in 1985-7 and, given a year or so's thinking time on this one, I think the best solution is to use that group as a natural point to go to the US catalogue for that year and continue on with the stuff we didn't have. I had thought about doing Megatron with Jetfire. Then I saw the 85 catalogue and got a surprise! botchthecrab.com/galleryImage.asp?gallery=10&image=284

It's a great line in the context of coming after a full page or more devoted to a Strike Plane spectacularly crashing and burning after Bluestreak takes it out with one shot. He's also funny in US #11 'Brainstorm', trying to get Buster to explain kissing, shortly before taking out Laserbeak - again with one shot. Martin

It's down to the techspecs being so well written. The characters popped at you. And still do.

Optimus should get his own poll. There are three different units to vote for after all.

The aim is a figure will only be up for the vote ONCE, when they first appear.
Megatron is on the US 84 catalogue, as are 5 cars not on the UK one. Surely you noticed HIS absence?

Yes of course! I remember two '84 catalogues. An early one and a later one. I encountered both more or less at the same time. The early one is the one you're covering at the mo, the later one had Megatron, Prowl, and the other missing cars. Then the '85 one had the Dinos, Insecticons, Skids, Tracks, Cone-heads etc.

I love reading about the personal connections everyone has to these figures. This is a great thread. Though I picked Sideswipe, Bluestreak is the only one I have much of a personal connection to; I didn't own him, but one of my best friends got him on a day I visited him and so he was the first boxed Transformer I ever saw; possibly the second Transformer at all after I got Gears, and so he's always carried a special place in my heart.

Martin I didn't come to the UK comic till a bit after that, but I liked his wee bit in Brainstorm. Never had him as a kid, or in fact saw him in the plastic/die-cast as he wasn't one of the toys any of my friends had. However, being on that Stationery set cover meant he seemed like a big deal. I think Bluestreak's place in people's memory has suffered from the fact that his box art was in a completely different colour scheme from the toy/comic/cartoon. We take it on faith that it's Bluestreak, but it's no more Bluestreak than Prowl or Smokescreen. Martin

I was wondering what toys had the UK 88 catalogue. My childhood PMOP and Cloudburst didn't, and of the stuff I've picked up 2nd hand with paperwork, Bomb-Burst and Carnivac both have the 87 catalogue.

The toy Bluestreak has always been silver, as per the UK catalogue. www.tfu.info/1984/Autobot/Bluestreak/bluestreak.htmThe US catalogue shows a blue Bluestreak This was never released as a Transformer in 1984/5 and has never been used on a Transformer version of the original Fairlady Z. There's some good fakes and some rumours, but I don't think I've ever seen it proved to exist. tfwiki.net/wiki/Bluestreak_(G1)/toys#NotesThe origin of these colours comes from the Diaclone line where the toy originated. www.diaclone.net/orid/dia042/index.htmlDiaclone is also the origin for the colours used in the cartoon, with the black bonnet & roof. Thes have appeared on a TF on the e-Hobby Anime Bluesreak www.tfu.info/2002/Cybertron/Bluestreak/bluestreak.htm
