Mark Ruffalo is also one of the people they've been intentionally keeping information from (spiderman kid is one of the others), because they can't keep secrets.

What a film! Marvel keep surpassing themselves in terms of the sheer spectacle of these films. Brilliant. Loved it.

Rewatched on Friday and still loved it.
People mostly seem focused on RDJ staying or going after Avengers 4, but for me Chris Evans is the really big question. Captain America 1-3 and Avengers 1-4 are essentially one ongoing story and have been the narrative backbone of the MCU.
If RDJ goes they lose the big star, but if Evans goes they need a new character to build ongoing stories around. Captain Marvel appears to be inteded as that characer, but is totally untested.
Rewatched Iron Man on saturday (I think I said something similar at the beginning of this thread). Watching Iron Man with Infinity Wars is insane. Possibly more so than going from The Fast And the Furious to Fast 8 (or whatever its called).
You go from a film about a really advanced suit of armour to a film about aliens fighting wizards and people with superpowers over magic stones set on multiple worlds. Even the Earth based tech has gone from believably being vaguely theoretically possible tech to future nanoscience magic tech.
It works, they still feel like part of the same story and yet it honestly wouldnt have been that much weirder if Star Trek IV had seen the Enterprise travel back in time to Middle Earth to fight Sauron.

I'm still reeling from watching that. Such a big cast, yet it worked. Thanos is the best villain that series has had.
I fear the MCU without the big names. RDJ is the perfect Stark. Would they retire Iron Man or recast?

I would not recast Tony, I just cant imagine who could replace him any time soon. Hopefully they dont kill him and instead find a way to retire him out of the way in the hope the can coax him back for just enough screen time every couple of years that it seems like hes still involved. I mean its already 6 years since he last starred in his own film. He had the 3rd most screen time in Infinity War but that only came to 18 minutes and I imagine it was less than 5 minutes in Homecoming.
Likewise Fury seems to be around all the time but apart from Avengers and Winter Soldier I doubt hes had more than 5 minutes screen time in any of the films. In fact his third biggest role was probably in Agents of Shield.
Replacing Iron Man, maybe. I imagine the legacy characters thing the comics have done over the last few years might be used, but theyve sort of done the protege thing with him and Peter in the MCU.
If they are going to swipe any legacy characters from the comics I'd hope its Thor and in 5-10 years Ms Marvel (though with Captain Marvels 90s origin I guess they could do Ms Marvel right alongside Captain Marvel, though that would be pretty strange).

From what I've heard, RDJ is tired of playing Ironman, but not Tony Stark.
So honestly, I think it would be fab to have Riri Williams become Ironman, and Tony act as the Bruce Wayne to her Terry McGuinness' Batman.
But also, I think that Black Panther and Chadwick Boseman have proven themselves to be stand strong enough to take over Chris Evan's place as the narrative backbone for the MCU. For Captain America, they have Sam and Bucky (but please god not bucky).

Thor is a relatively easy one to do. Someone else who is worthy picks up the hammer and is transformed.

Even the Earth based tech has gone from believably being vaguely theoretically possible tech to future nanoscience magic tech. One of the reasons why Iron Man is good is because you could suspend your sense of disbelief as it does a great job in making the tech believable. As soon as Jarvis and the suits became too powerful in Iron Man 3, it felt less like Tony saving the day and destroyed any sense of a person's strength of will and choices overcoming the odds. That's not what I want from a hero film. The nano-tech seen in Infinity War crosses over way too far and feels like there's been an ongoing studio decision to introduce some kind of new tech to the suit each film because it will be cool. And that's not a good reason in story telling I'm afraid.

i just wonder after having got used to these peoples portrayals of the characters, would I really enjoy another person doing it?
would they try to hard to be like their original counterpart?

I think any recasting would be a massive mistake. It's always a rough ride when it's recasting a much-loved portrayal (which is I think why the Amazing Spiderman films struggled but the Marvel Spiderman didn't, and why no-one really minded that Bruce Banner got recast but would go nuclear if they tried to recast him now)

I don't actually know if I've seen Iron Man (I know I've seen 2 but have no memory of the plot, and I really enjoyed 3). I bought the first dvd for 50p this weekend.

I dont mind the advancing tech. Though IM3 did advance it to a point where Tony didn't really need to be involved so then had to go out of its way to create a situation wher he was deprieved of his suit for most of the film. It worked fine, but I do think it would be hard to make an IM4 because Tony can now go one on one with Infinity powered Thanos and not get instantly smushed. I don't know what threat is big enough to pose a challenge, while also not making the films budget Avengers sized.

Good point, that. I suppose because Cap has been so integral to the ongoing story, his films have reached Avengers level anyway. Iron Man is kinda stuck now. He'd have to go in a different direction.

Jetty is probably right go the legacy route. Peppers pregnant and after Infinity War is ready to retire but doesnt want to feel like hes leaving the world undefended. He liked having Parker as his protege but hes Spider Man and Tony is looking for Iron Man so goes looking for his replacement. Itd keep the film small scale and continue Tonys developement and introduces a long term replacement and if it all goes horribly wrong Marvel can just give RDJ another couple of islands in the pacific to come back as an out of retirement Iron Man.

Also, Spiderman: Homecoming, Antman, and Antman & The Wasp showcase that the world does not need to be in peril to have a compelling threat.

I quite enjoyed the Iron Man-in-space Gillen arc with The Recorder, Deaths Head, etc. Even Greg Land's art was more bearable than usual on it!
