Crops planted!
We have deployed additional defences as last year's crops were ruined by cats crapping on them.

Yep, ours are doing well. Not planted out yet, still in pots. Starting to harden them off. Doing some flowers too.
Courgette, potatoes, shallots, Stanley beans, sunflowers, forget-me-not, morning glory, pansies, and sweat pea.
Nothing hugely ambitious, but should provide some entertainment.
My ferns are looking terrible, though....

You can get humane cat deterrents, it's just a metal cat silhouette with reflective eyes.

That was my job on Sunday. My broken ankle then weeks of bad weather and being busy with other things meant that the garden's been unattended this year. But it's now well tended, with lots of weeding done and overdue tidying up from last year's growth done at last. It's too late to plant much in the way of produce this year but our berries, grapes, apples and potatoes (lots left in the ground last year) are all doing well. The honeysuckle's been growing like mad this spring.

Cold winters, cold and wet springs, and then dry summers are messing with us gardeners. According to Monty and the lovely Francis Tophill, and friends. It's a challenge.

The honeysuckle's flowering for the first time. Roses are out, too. Courgettes that I bought for 20p each at clearance in Wilko are doing well. We look set for a bumper crop of blackcurrants and a large, first crop of grapes.

I spent much of today pottering in the garden, including putting up two new trellises, one each side of the honeysuckle. In due course, the whole wall should be honeysuckle and grapevine!
Meanwhile, onions that have been in the ground since last year and are looking big and impressive above the surface are refusing to plump up at all below ground. I assume it's because it's been so dry.

But then some might say I've always been middle aged.

I really want to get out and do some jobs in my garden before more things wake up but I can't find any time at all. Middle age seems to consist of not being able to do the jobs I want to do because the jobs I _have_ to do take priority. Things that aren't jobs of any sort rarely get a look in.

I know that feeling well. School doesn't help. Weekends tend to become somewhat pressured. I'd love it if I could have the occasional day where I don't feel completely exhausted.
