Had hoped to get out and cut back some bushes and things in the garden today. My father decided he wanted to come around for his fourth attempt at rehanging our back gates instead. They still need more adjusting even now.

I know that feeling well. School doesn't help. Weekends tend to become somewhat pressured. I'd love it if I could have the occasional day where I don't feel completely exhausted. I'm cautiously optimistic I can get the balance a bit better next year. After a decade as a HoY, I'm moving sideways to a couple of smaller academic TLRs. I dream of being somewhat in control of my own time.

I made a resolution this year that the ten and a half hours I spend in school every weekday should be enough and that I was going to reclaim at least weekday evenings to do something else. That worked for a while, but has crumbled through the spring term.

Spring term is always the worst for me. I'm forever wishing May would come so I can say goodbye to my exam classes even though they're the best to teach.
Back on topic... Damn the squirrels! Damn them all!

I've been itching to get out into the garden since January and yesterday finally had the time and the weather. In fact, after a cold snap the few days before, it was a surprisingly warm, sunny day. (Wet and windy today.) The garden's now ready for the spring, after removing last year's dead growth, weeding and general tidying up.

I really want to get out and do some jobs in my garden before more things wake up but I can't find any time at all. Middle age seems to consist of not being able to do the jobs I want to do because the jobs I _have_ to do take priority. Things that aren't jobs of any sort rarely get a look in. I think you've just summed up middle age there, good buddy.

I've been meaning to dig a pond in my garden for... two years..?
Bugger, it might be three years.
It's probably three years.
(When calculating things in middle-age, always add a year to the length of time you thought from which things have occurred.)
Oh gods, I'm middle-aged...

We filled our pond in. Too much work involved in repairing and maintaining it. It was the Pright thing to do.

You can prototype in your own garden. Attract some ducks in.

This house had a pond when we moved in. It proved time consuming and unrewarding to manage so I filled it in.

The only good thing ours did was attract a heron to the garden.

4/5 pumpkin seeds sprouted. Purple carrots doing well. Cucumbers doing well. Chillis (3 varieties), 5/12, but they can take longer to come up. Cape gooseberries... Nothing!! Goal this weekend is to repot and start hardening up outside during the day for the carrots and cucumber plants. Pumpkins all ready for hardening as planted the seeds in pots not seed tray/propogators.

Not a conscious decision, but I seem to be keeping it simple so far this year and just trying to maintain everything. Haven't really had the time for anything else and the wet weather has definitely had an impact.

Our 'crops' are doing well this year so far.
Runner beans, french beans, sweet pea, sunflowers, and THE MYSTERY SEEDS.
Also done some pruning, some weeding, and clearing for FINALLY digging my pond!
I WILL HAVE AMPHIBIANS IN MY GARDEN!

Cucumbers and carrots doing ok.
Pumpkins, not so much. One twisted round in the wind, another in the front garden had someone climb over the 3 foot wall and stomp on it, smaller one in the back garden not grown much. May only have one plant out of my batch survive!

We have birds nesting above the office window. Chicks hatched this week. They are very noisy! Keeping an eye out in case any fall into the garden as it is cat country here.

Most of last years carrots have been attacked by slugs or something but a few are reinvigorated and Im hoping for seeds soon. Ditto the beetroot? IS it beetroot, I dont know....
Compost bag is doing okay though I should have been turning it more so I dont think I'll have usable soil for this summer.
