Mark Kermode: "The emotional beats of it. They're as manipulative as anything, but they work. And I was sitting in the cinema, against all my better judgement, going 'I'm a serious film critic,' and going 'Yes! I'm going to punch the air!' I started crying at one point... Cinema's had a bad time the last few years. This is the kind of movie that reminds people why they get off the couch, why they go to the cinema... See it on a big screen." www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0017r38/the-film-review-top-gun-maverick-the-bobs-burger-movie-between-two-worldsMartin

1. Spider-Man no Way Home 2. Moonfall. 3. Death on the Nile 4. The Batman 5. Morbius 6. The Lost City 7. Dr Strange ITMOM 8. Everything Everywhere All at Once
9. Sonic 2 - I think it was probably better than the first one (which I liked), but there was a bit in the middle that dragged. It probably wasnt that long of a section but at the time I thought the rest of the film was going to be like it and I dispaired.
10. Chip and Dale - Should not work as well as it does. Amazed it got by the Disney higher ups. The Lonely Island guys need to do something with the Muppets next.
11. Top Gun Maverick - Exactly what I expected. Did not disappoint. Well worth the journey to see in Imax.

It's a great film to come back to!
Next week 'Jurassic World: Dominion' kicks 'Top Gun' off my Cineworld's SuperScreen. Got my ticket for it already.

Alright. Okay then. Yes, Maverick is fantastic. That definitely joins the small elite of films where the sequel is as good as the original. Really, really enjoyed that.

12. Top Gun Maverick 4DX - Despite saying I would never see another film in 4DX after the abomination that was Venom 2 4DX I figured surely not every film could have been programmed by someone who was drunk and had never experienced motion.
Top Gun Maverick had got the details right everywhere else so if one film was going to get this technology right it would likely be this one. At the very least moving seats would surely make more sense used to replicate sitting in a seat in a plane than two alien slime monsters punching each other.
It was better. At times it was very good. There was some quite subtle moves usually during slow camera movements that were really good for some reason. The flying stuff was definitely more focused with the seats matching the twists and turns pretty well. But were it really worked was the other effects. Acceleration was paired with blasts of cool air, the cinema was really hot, so this was very welcome as well as effective. Missile launches were accompanied by bursts of light and smoke blew across the screen. At one point they fired up the snow machine. Which was kind of cool, but it was really noisey and started up at maybe the quietest moment in the film which was confusing.
The main issue I had wasnt the fault of the film, the foot rests on the 4DX chairs are just to high, forcing me to sit uncomfortably. Taking my feet off the rests leaves them hanging in the air while the seat is flying all over. Thats then a different kind of uncomfortable and feels unsafe.
Also even here its slightly distracting from the film so really if I do 4DX in the future it will be for second viewing when i dont have to make sense of the plot. Then the question is how many films do i want to see more than once.
So, yeah. I guess it can work when done right and makes sense for cinemas facing simultaneously streamed releases to offer something that isnt available at home. But it cost nearly £5 as a top up on my unlimited card. Thats a lot even if I was certain of Top Gun quality programming. But when you dont know if you'll be getting that or 2 hours of constant, senseless, violent shaking that ruins your enjoyment, well thats not worth the gamble.
If its anything like 3d then more films will be more like Venom 2 than Maverick.

13. The Lion King 2. Since its a film I saw for the first time this year, I'll post here.
After reading something on twitter that suggested The Lion King 2 was actually good and since Disney+ means I have lazy access to it I gave it a go.
And its good. Not good for a straight to video Disney sequel by the TC animation Studio, but actually a very good film. Good story, good acting, good music, surprisingly good, good art. If theres one area were the lack of money shows its in the animation or at least the colouring of the animation. Its not bad its just basic. The colours are very flat. And even this is largely ignorable thanks to the very good background artwork.
Consider me happily shocked.

I was writing a reply, but I've deleted it and started again, because I just realised you're not talking about the film I thought you were talking about. I assumed you were talking about the photorealistic remake, but I see now that there is actually a film called The Lion King 2. Which I haven't seen.
As you were.

Jurassic World: Dominion is objectively a bad film but just the right kind of nonsense I need in these current terms, especially on Imax. Jen and I had a great time.
Cinema was very quiet this evening.

I have not done my league table for the year so far.
1: Top Gun: Maverick. 2: Jurassic World: Dominion. 3: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. 4: Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Not done the cinema for a few weeks as the screening have been rather full at a high covid rate time. Hopefully next weekend. I can't see there being a big crowd on Sunday night for the Cushing Dalek films. Booked for early doors next Saturday for 10:20 am Thor 4 on the IMAX.

'Lightyear' was honestly a lot of fun, a blast. My only issue with the film is purely aesthetic, if you're going to push this film as having the conceit of being a film from the 80s or 90s, then you should commit and go to emulate the bright colours of adventure films of that era and not keep with the very washed out colours of modern film, although, that might help make the CG flow a little better.

Of all the MCU films, Thor 4 is the one that most made me feel like at least half an hour had been chopped out of it. So much stuff going on with the characters felt rushed. Korg’s voiceovers felt more like they were there for infodump purposes than entertainment. Actually, I think it would have worked better as two movies, with the first one ending with the fight in New Asgard. Far more stuff that was described needed to be shown rather than told, not least Gorr’s early campaign. Great soundtrack, though. Interested to hear what others think. Martin
