1: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (2022 Director's Edition). 2: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (2022 Director's Edition re-release). 3: Top Gun: Maverick (IMAX). 4: Spider-Man: No Way Home (extended re-release) 5: Jaws (IMAX re-release): I still shat myself when the head bobs out of the boat. 6: The Fast and the Furious (4DX re-release): The vibrating chair actually adds a lot to a film which is mostly daft car chases. 7: Minions: The Rise of Gru. 8: Bullet Train. 9: Jurassic World: Dominion (IMAX) 10: Batman Begins (4DX re-release): Great to see it again but the vibrating chair really doesn't work for this film at all. 11: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (IMAX). 12: Thor: Love and Thunder. 13: Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Oh hey 1. Operation Mincemeat Finally! 2. Moonage Daydream There are three ways to make music biopics. There's the bad way (Bohemian Rhapsody), the fun way (Rocketman) and the arty way (Montage of Heck). Fittingly, this opts for the third way, and is all the better for it.

Watchable though I doubt it will linger in the mind long. 12: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (IMAX). 13: Thor: Love and Thunder. 14: Everything Everywhere All At Once.

1. Top Gun: Maverick 2. Amsterdam 3. Spider-Man: No Way Home (extended re-release) 4. The Black Phone 5. Firestarter 6. Where the Crawdads Sing 7. Jurassic World: Dominion 15. Thor: Love and Thunder 16. Everything Everywhere All at Once 17. The Lost City 18. Morbius 19. Moonfall 20. Death on the Nile 21. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent 22. Ambulance 23. Nightmare Alley 24. The Batman 25. The 355 Well, well, well. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson can play funny, charismatic, tongue-in-cheek heroes. He does this in the 'Fast & Furious' franchise, 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' and 'Jumanji'. He can also play unfunny, boring, over-serious heroes. He does this in 'Scorpion King', 'Jungle Cruise' and (as I suspected from the trailer) 'Black Adam'. The first half hour of this film is the first half-hour of another humourless DCEU dud of a film, a film called 'Black Adam'. Then. Half an hour into a crap film, they switch to a completely different film, 'Justice Society vs Black Adam', and it becomes the best film in the DCEU after 'The Suicide Squad', starring an eight-character ensemble of whom Black Adam is the least inspiring. I had a silly smile on my face for far too much of the subsequent 90 minutes. The writers have just blatantly replaced the boring DCEU Justice League with a completely different team written to be instantly engaging and likeable. Why couldn't they have spent the last decade making movies about these guys???
I particularly liked the fight scene in which a room filled with Justice League posters and memorabilia got systematically trashed.
The mid-end-credits scene was pointless.
More Justice Society films, please!! Martin

Starts rubbish suddenly gets better and unlike most DC films it sticks the landing. Personally I think Shazam was better so would place this third. Just edging out Wonder Woman which for most of its run time is better but was massively let down by its vomiting cgi all over the screen at the end rather than doing good finale. Trailer spoiler warning Spoiler As someone with no knowledge of the character I was annoyed that the first trailer decided to give away something that the film was treating as a major twist/surprise. Then again my brother who had seen the same trailer didn't think it had given the twist away even when he rewatched it after the film.

Black Panther 2 was far too dour. It also could easily have lost an hour. Nowhere near enough plot for 2 hours and 41mins.
What a downer. I was a tad disappointed. The first one was fantastic.

First thing to say is that Marvel Studios rightly realised they needed to do a serious MCU film after Thor 4 and She-Hulk, to prove that they still could, and they succeeded in doing that. Second thing to say is that the supporting cast of the first Black Panther film totally proved they could carry a film as leads. All the Wakandans who reprised roles in this film remained likeable and charismatic in this one.
The film's weakness was it's lack of a decent bad guy. Namor was just as one-dimensional and irritating on film as he is in all the comics I've read, and none of his followers were any more interesting. This resulted in the film sagging heavily in the middle, where they got the most screen time. I think the film would have been more satisfying if the Martin Freeman / CIA plot was fleshed out more and actually went somewhere relevant to the final act.

They needed to do a lot more or a lot less with Scott than they did. I enjoyed the Namor stuff so I didn't feel the sag, though my brother did, butI do agree about him being a disappointing bad guy especially in comparison to Killmonger.

24. Weird - Really really good, but I strongly suspect it would have fallen flat on its face if they hadnt cast Radcliffe or someone equally committed. That he was completely jacked coming off another role was just the cherry on top.
25. Black Panther Wakanda Forever - It was nice to get back to a serious MCU project. Living up to the first one was always going to be virtually impossible that they got even close given everything that has happened in the last couple of years is amazing.
I dont imagine anyone imagined when they cast Angela Bassett in the first one that she would be leading the sequel, but here we are and it was great.

There's Avatar 2 out on 16 Dec. if you like that sort of thing. I'll be skipping it, as I got nothing from the first one (or the trailer for this one).
Nothing really for me now until Ant-Man 3 on 17 Feb., then Shazam 2 on 17 March, John Wick 4 on 24 March, Scream 6 on 31 March, and Dungeons & Dragons on 7 April.
Oh, there is a Gerard Butler action movie called Plane out on 27 Jan.

Violent Night - Late and shockingly unexpected shout for film of the year. All time great Christmas film here. So, so not prepared for that. If you like Christmas and John Wick. Or Christmas and Die Hard, go see it. {Spoiler}I went in with nothing but the elevator pitch. Santa beats up bad guys. That plus starring David Harbour was enough to get me to see.
I didn't even realise it was the real Santa when it started.
But its a proper magic of Christmas film. And its a proper Die Hard / John Wick* action film.
Mind blown.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent 25. Ambulance 26. Nightmare Alley 27. The Batman 28. The 355 Yeah, I enjoyed that. It made me laugh. But I liked it as an action comedy, not really as a Christmas film. Just as I've never been able to think of Die Hard 2 as a Christmas film. 'Cos I don't see the spirit of Christmas being categorising people in a black & white way as naughty or nice and killing all the naughty ones. The Muppet Christmas Carol (which does embody the spirit of Christmas) would have been a very different movie if it had gone down that route. I'm not sure what it says about my brain these days that I thought the least realsitic thing about Violent Night was the baddies letting the little girl talk freely on a walkie-talkie while being held hostage.
And I have visions of the reborn Santa going on a killing spree and murdering all the children on the naughty list with his hammer rather than just not give them presents this year.
The bit with the step ladder to the attic made me shout "No!" out loud in the cinema when I saw what was about to happen to the guy. I don't think I've ever done that before. Martin
