Season 1
An Unearthly Child - 7
Excellent first part, the rest really really drags despite some surprisingly good direction.
The Daleks - 8
I was actually pleasantly surprised by The Daleks, it seemed to zip by and actually treated the Daleks like real characters with their deaths at the end a tragedy. Won't see that again in a hurry!
The Edge of Destruction - 6
Great set up and set pieces, not followed through with a weird anticlimatic ending.
Marco Polo - 9
It's one of those stories that you think can't possibly be as good as its reputation suggests, and yet is. Very absorbing story, it felt more like 4 eps than 7!
The Keys of Marinus - 7
I liked parts, not others. The Voord were good, the Ice Soldiers and the city of the brain guys. The trial episode was hilariously bad though as the villain is caught out twice by the same feint. "Wait a minute I didn't do that when I murdered that guy WHOOPS!"
The Aztecs - 10
Rewatched this the other week, pretty much faultless.
The Sensorites - 4
The Sensorites is the weak link in the season, but not nearly as weak a link as I remember.
The Reign of Terror - 8
I was not looking forward to this one, and actually had the soundtrack sitting about for ages before I cracked it open. Fab stuff. Not seen the actual eps though, this may change given the DVD release!

The Reign of Terror 10 I have seen the episodes and it is top, top stuff.

Not seen this one yet! Just this and Shada then I've seen them all!
The Dalek Invasion of Earth - 2
I might need to rewatch it, but I thought apart from the novelty value of Daleks in London, it was really really boring and badly put together. Sorry!
The Rescue - 9
I love this one! How great is that twist! And the confrontation between Hartnell and the villain at the end is surprisingly well-shot.
The Romans - 9
Another corker, the Romans is hilarious. Thank goodness it survives, I can imagine it falling into super obscurity if it didn't exist. That, or people being under the impression it was a Ben-Hur style epic.
The Web Planet - 2
Zzzzzzz
The Crusade - 9
Another quality period piece. I find on the whole I like the Hartnell historicals a lot more than the sci-fi.
The Space Museum - 2
The first part is amazing. The rest of it is so terribly banal. Saved from a 1 by the first episode but my goodness, what were they thinking.
The Chase - 4
By turns crap and amazing. Doctor Who at its most crazy. My opinion of it has risen slightly on subsequent viewings.
The Time Meddler - 9
Again, top notch stuff. I remember seeing this when it was repeated in the early 90s and was absolutely riveted to the tv.

They'll be a lot more Galaxy 4 love when the episode hits DVD It's not terrible, but it's not great by any means. About a 3/10 (ie below average). Hardly the all-conquering classic I was led to believe! I am told the surviving episode is quite impressive though, I am perfectly willing to reconsider should the visuals rescue it! That reminds me Season 3 review time! The Reign of Terror is quite good. Strangely, I didn't really get it until I heard the audio release (the VHS left me cold). I think it's one of those stories where every part really counts so the audio had a lot of the important story information*!
It doesn't have the tragic majesty of The Massacre though, but then the tone is very different.

Put me in the category of those who find both The Gunfighters and Celestial Toymaker chores to get through. It is interesting though - because of the way I saw and heard these stories rather scattershottly I have never really thought about them in terms of how they stand up as Seasons. I don't think it ever occcured to me how many absolute corkers were in Season Three.
