There is a bit of a narrative going round that it is just white sexist male trump supporters who hate the film, which is annoying as liking something is not automatically a political action, but that seems to be 90% of the defense of media criticism nowadays. I mean, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why someone might not like it!!

I mean, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand why someone might not like it!! Oh dear. The "if you are not with us in all things you are against us in all things" echo chamber is just becoming ever-increasingly stronger isn't it? My boss didn't like it that much, for reasons I can understand. I did like it, for reasons that he an understand. We both have perfectly valid views, and can understand the other's point of view. The fact that we disagree about the film does not make us enemies. And it certainly doesn't make him a sexist Trump supporter... As you say, liking or not liking a film is not a political statement, it is an artistic one. The problem is that the internet echo chamber is having the effect of paring all elements of life down to a simplistic "goodies and baddies" narrative, in a very binary way - where if you disagree with consensus in any way then you are immediately a member of the forces of evil and assumed to disagree with consensus in every other way. It is tedious and annoying, and is not having a positive effect on debate or social interaction in general. Karl

Just so you know I'm not making it up, one site I used to enjoy was Tardis Eruditorium for its analysis of old Dr Who episodes. The piece on Last Jedi starts: As if there is literally no other reason for disliking it than being white (?) male (?) and a sexist trump supporter ( ) You're allowed not to like something or be disappointed in something without it being some sort of right wing agenda. Sometimes a bad film is just bad.

Oh, don't worry - I knew that you weren't making it up. I'd seen the same sentiments espoused before online. Initially it was advanced by some as part of the reason that the Rotten Tomatos statistics on The Last Jedi were unusually split. The voices that were pointing out that there were flaws in the work, and that it was possible to simply dislike the work in itself without that being linked to anything else weren't so much shouted down as ignored. (There was a sense of people with their fingers in their monitors going "lalalalalalalalal I can't hear you" to any other explanation other than "Nazi's are angry about the film and spamming negative reviews".)
[For the record, I enjoyed it despite its flaws - which I am fully aware of and would not deny, and am of the opinion that their are a whole raft of reasons people might not like it, all of which are valid and relate solely to the film itself.]
There are many reasons for which I count t'Hub one of the sane spaces on the internet, this is merely6 one of them.

I know the answer to that!
Honestly, the narrative is that Rogue One was trite fanservice that only fat neckbeards could possibly enjoy because it had original Star Wars stuff and Darth Vader.
You will see that opinion around the internet a LOT. You are not allowed to like stuff without a motive beyond enjoying the story, you see.

The binary arguments about art and culture online do indeed annoy me. I suspect my opinion of The Last Jedi would confuse many of these keyboard warriors: bits of were enjoyable, bits of it were terrible. Overall it was watchable but I've not felt the urge to go see it again unlike the other SW films.
Thing is, there is now so much many SW productions that it's not a big deal if one of them is a bit average for me. There'll be another one along shortly. There's a film a year and from 2019 a TV show as well. I also wouldn't be surprised if Disney move it up to 2 or 3 films a year (as they have done with Marvel) if the popularity is still there. I suspect having 'Solo' come out only 6 months after 'The Last Jedi' may partly be a test to see if the audience is there for more of this stuff more frequently.

I suspect there is enough popularity there but will be interesting to see if there is an impact on production quality etc. For myself the last two have put me off enough I'll now be waiting to see reviews in future before giving any more a try.

Finally had the time to get back for a second viewing. Somewhat surprised to find the film held together better than expected. As much as I liked it first time I did wonder if it would fall apart without the shock of the unexpected directions it went in. Even the casino section worked which I thought was a bit forced first time around. It probably helps that one of the things Ive always liked about the prequels (and clone wars and Rebels) was seeing more of the Star Wars universe. .........some time passes.... Spoiler Spoiler Massive Inter-stellar Spaceships s-l-o-w-l-y engage in a 'chase' through space towards a convieniently nearby Rebel -oops, no I mean- Resistance secret base... Spoiler Spoiler Its really not that slow space is just very big.
I dont think the base being nearby is in the least bit coincidental. It seems smart to choose an emergency jump somewhere near enough an old resistance base that it can be reached in an emergency (for example within non lightspeed fuel range if lightspeed engines have been damaged.) but far enough away to not give away the loction. Spoiler Spoiler ...oh, and still no Lando... Spoiler If I have one complaint so far with the new trilogy it is the fact that the older cast have had very little interaction or not shown up at all.
Though I now imagine Lando will be brought in to bring the news of Leia's off screen death to the rebels. Though that task may fall to Ghost Luke or Ghost Yoda (even though no one would know who he is) Spoiler I am now convinced theres more to Reys parents than Kylo said. Snoke admits to connecting their minds and influencing what they saw. Though technically both of their visions came true it was not how they expected so it would be strange if the only 100% straight up part of the mind link was Reys parents lack of identity. To me it would make more sense if Snoke/Kylo were just trying to use here fears against her. Knowing that the actor who played Ackbar died before production began, his treatment in the film makes a little more sense, though I m still not 100% happy about it. Admiral Holdo should still have been Sabine Wren, Im more conviced of that than ever. Plus she says rebels a lot.

I too saw it a second time and although much of the comedy still grated on me and the entire casino bit was forced as hell to give Finn and Rose something to do and the inclusion of Maz still confuses me, the rest held up a lot, lot better than the first time. Re. Rey's parents... Rey herself says they were nobody after Kylo says she's always known. And one of the points of the film is that the force is everywhere and in everyone. Whether it's a slave boy or daughter of random junk traders.
Also, in flashback scenes Kylo had the sabre lost on Bespin, so that explains the comment he makes in E7. How he got it from Bespin is still a mystery, or how Maz got it.

Good point about the closeness of the base, Under 3. That... helps.
I've been thinking lately that it's almost as though they're telling the story of the forming of the Rebellion. Again.

I had a day off and there was surprisingly a 2d showing at the IMAX screen so I thought I would give it a 2nd go as my opinion of TFA went up the 2nd time I saw it.
Alas, my opinion of TLJ went down, to my surprise. First time I thought it was ok, some good bits and some bad bits but watchable if a bit 'meh' overall.
Second time around I thought it was staggeringly dull and boring. It also felt very televisual (despite the high budget). I was surprised to feel this as this time I was watching it on a much bigger acreen with better sound. Oh well!

My problem with the slow, slow chase is the lack of explanation for why the Imperials, sorry, New Order, don't use the precision hyperspace jumping we've seen so many times elsewhere to catch up with the Rebels, sorry, Resistance. I mean, Rose and Finn can hop off to another part of the galaxy and come back, so why can't the bad guys catch up? Martin

There are cubic light years of pure nothingness between star systems. If your prey jumps into a system then there is something in that system that they are interested in, especially when the First Order already know the Resistance have no fuel left to move elsewhere. But then, both Lucas and Abrams have already established they have no clue about physics and astrophysics, Johnson may as well join the dopey gang.

I know. I jest. I don't get this fan love of Ackbar. I was trying to explain it to someone at work and failing. Then someone else (who hasn't seen the film yet) overheard and told us all how much he loved the Admiral! I honestly think it's because his toy was so ubiquitous. Everyone had an Admiral Ackbar toy!

But the somthing of interest only has to be a habitabal planet/space station/ship. It doesnt have to be a secret base.

Has everyone seen this film now? When can I start opening complaining about SpoilerAdmiral Akbar's death Spoiler Im torn on this. if you are going to kill him give him a heroic death. But you cant really put him in Not Sabine Wrens place because the plot requires Poe not to know him.
So then you need another event in an already packed film.
Besides Star Wars has a tendency to kill of characters in fairly unheroic ways
