I know. I jest. I don't get this fan love of Ackbar. Just when you think you know someone... *turns away from FortMax2002*

Has everyone seen this film now? When can I start opening complaining about Admiral Akbar's death I like the character fine, but I was ok with the manner of their death. This is a war. Death can come suddenly and without warning. It does to many supporting characters across the various Star Wars films, and rarely is it dwelt on. Truth be told, that is what that character is - he is a supporting character and therefore doesn't have the "plot armour" of a main character. Main Characters can only die when it is significant to the plot. Supporting characters, on the other hand, might die at any moment. Especially in a pulp adventure story where everyone who hangs around for more than one scene is at risk of finding themselves in a death-defying situation at any moment... Karl

I think the moment for that character would have worked fine if another character who appeared to be offed in the same incident hadn't suddenly displayed Super Power they showed no indication of before or after! I still find that moment to be hilarious. It's not meant to be though.

Karl I hear what ya saying, Karlos, but the character in question is a worthy 'Fan Favorite' and a pretty imaginative and memorable character (despite what Fortmax2002 says). His death was poorly handled. He deserved something a bit better.

The new films should be about new things, not just nodding back to the old ones for this or that character to get another 'worthy' scene or not.

Well I felt TLJ was trying to do something new, far more than TFA. I just personally found the way it went about it to be a bit boring but I can't fault the effort.

The new films should be about new things I totally agree, which is why they irritate me so much for returning to the old Empire / Rebellion / Death Star / young Jedi in training / cute droid formula rather than go in a completely new direction for the Star Wars Galaxy following ROTJ. I'd have been quite happy if none of the classic characters had appeared in the post-ROTJ films. Martin

He deserved something a bit better. He found redemption for his mistakes, and sacrificed himself in order that those he cared about - his sister, and the student who had dragged him from his morass of guilt and helped him to come to terms with his own fallibility - could live... He died at a time of his choosing, giving his life in a manner he chose that was in service of others. How much better a way to die is there? Karl

I feel TFA was the place to nod and wink to all the past side characters from before. But... move on. It's a bit like in Trek when that bloke's friend's cousin 'happens' to be the governor of that colony of the week. The Galaxy is too big for things like that.

What BD/DVD promos have people found? I've only spotted a free book deal at Sainsbury's.

Reports from various sites are that it's a novelisation of the film for a younger audience.

Sat down and watched it this evening.
Still really liked it, actually enjoyed it more on a second viewing. The pacing issues didn't bother me as much this time around.
I hope the wee Porgs on the Falcon are in the next film.

Having been very nonplus about it following my first viewing, I have since seen in 3 more times. Another cinema outing, once early last month through... 'means' and finally on BD.
I have found it improve with every viewing and as much as my early criticisms remain, the character arks and some of the visuals outweigh them now.

Real life intervened as the film finished.
I knew about Ackbar having looked up the wookiepedia entry on Admiral Raddus some months ago, which kindly mentioned the destruction of the ship bearing his name and the loss of it's commanding officer. Thank you for that.
I also had an idea one other bit of "character development" was in the film.
Are spoilers off on this film now.

Film's theatrical run is just about over and the home video release was a week and a half ago. I reckon anyone desperate to see it has done so by now.

*FINALLY* Watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi For me the film didn't get going until halfway through, roughly when Rose and Finn got onto the Imperial ship. A lot of mucking about prior to that, especially on the casino planet. Where Force Awakens was SW with the serial numbers filed off, this was ESB all jumbled up. The hole on Luke's Island was the Degobah tree - show a submerged X-Wing to underline this - Crait, the salt planet was Hoth, and we even got a version of the Asteroid field chase with the Falcon, which also owes a debt to the ROTJ Death Star chase. Luke's Death sort of worked, but killing Ackbar in the background really annoyed me and would have annoyed me even more if it hadn't been spoilt for me by Wookiepedia. I did spot our other favourite character from ROTJ still around and on the Falcon at the end though. There's some good bits trying to get through in there but I need a think about the underlying depressing theme of your childhood heroes mucking things up. There's a bit too much of that in the real world.
