Can't believe how much my opinion has changed of this film. There's a lot going on character wise and whilst I;m still not keen on the slow space chase/casino, they drive Kylo, Poe and Finn's arcs.
Snoke basically admits that he is using Kylo and underestimates Kylo's power - he says it relating to Hux to Kylo, but it reflects on his overconfidence.
The casino subplot/DJ character - These seemed superfluous to me at first and I thought something much more interesting could be done with Finn, perhaps have him as the reason for the tracking given his First Order brainwashing past. However, Finn starts as a deserter, caring only for Rey and not the resistance. DJ presents him with what he will be if he follows this path, living free on neither side. By the time he fights Phasma he openly declares that he is Rebel Scum, but it's not until Rose crashes into him does his motivation change from hatred of the First Order to believing in an ideal. Whilst I still don't think the casino scenes were well done, the story arc is important for Finn's development.
Here's a question though - In A New Hope - Han Solo boasts of the Falcon's ability to outrun Imperial Starships, not the local bulk-cruisers, mind you. He's talking about the big Corellian ships (Corvettes?). First Order clearly needs some of these big Corellian ships in their fleet.
