Got this gnarly Gameboy! It works but screen is missing lots of lines. On a mission to fix it up - apparently it's doable! Wish me luck! Probably need to replace the speaker as well (I see new ones cost about £2) and fix the start button!

Nice project!
I don't have an original GB these days, but I have kept hold of my Gameboy Micro. It's so small, it's easy to slip in a pocket for a quick burst when stuck somewhere waiting for something.

Pretty though. And backlit, which is a big plus over the original Gameboy Advance. I installed a backlight on my Gameboy Advance, which is when I learned no matter how dust free you think your environment is, annoying flecks will ALWAYS get in where you don't want them.
They might be expensive because they were the tail end of the technology. They arrived just about when the DS did, so I can't imagine it was a huge seller.

Since you asked me to keep an eye out for one of these in January? I have not seen one. Not true I saw one, it was ridiculously priced.
I still dont own a Micro, but can see why it would be popular. Newest/least old, tiny, backlit, plays the whole back catalogue.

I've fallen out of the Nintendo loop somewhat in recent years. I had a 3DS but sold it to buy a tablet. But I must admit I'm tempted by the new clam-shell design 2DS XL though. Much I could catch up on with that.
If I had the time of course. I haven't turned my Playstation on for about three months. Sunbow Sundays absorb Saturdays now and Sundays are pretty much schoolwork.

I bought a 3DS for my Mum years ago which she never really used. Ive now stolen it to play the odd game, but have never gotten in to it. Barely touched the Wii U and Im still waiting on a price drop for the switch or at least a funky colour scheme.
6 days till Snes classic though.

I gave up looking for a preorder for that. I'm trusting in the recent news that Nintendo Europe are going to keep producing it into next year.
I was impressed with the 3D on the 3DS for a bit, it was some kind of magic not needing glasses, but I eventually played what few games I had with it switched off. That was before the 3DS actually had any decent games. An XL size screen would do it more justice I think.

I still have my Gameboy Colour from 1999 and it works fine. Still got a few games left for it (a few were lost). Every now and then I get it out for a bash of Tetris.

Progress! Didn't get a pic of the screen at its worse, but I'm trying to fix up the vertical lines After a bit of work: Now just got to wait for it to cool down and see if it stays fixed! Basically vertical lines are fixable, horizontal ones (and splotches) are not

That's impressive! How do you fix that? You have to remove the rubber strip under the screen and then use a soldering iron on the plasticy ribbon. The lines are missing as it's become unadhesed. The right amount of heat will get it back on (and the wrong will uh, burn through it)

I still need to replace the speaker. Give me time to turn the PCB into a giant molten blob of solder!

I decided the speaker was okay! So the next step was removing the screen backing with a razorblade! Cut myself three times! Ow ow ow Goal is a backlit screen. Managed to install the backlight (you can see my soldering just above the capacitor! Going for a sharper constrast, so screen is currently inverted. Next step is to install a bivert chip

Bivert chip installed (black square up top). This was a real fight! I had to desolder some pins first, and they just didn't want to budge! You can see the charring on that white chip below! Oops! And it works! Eeeey Just need a new case, the old one is grotty

Put a green backlight on a second one and got further in the overall build! Shot with and without flash to show the screen off! Not in love with the springyness of the start/select buttons but they work, and the alternative is the old discoloured silicone

New Gameboy Blue backlight, white everything else. Really wanted white silicone start/select buttons but the only ones I could source cost £10 from the US!! Also the screen is plastic, not glass as likewise the only glass screen that was white was from the US and sadly a different source! Had real problems with the bivert on this one, had to resolder the chip about five times! Got there in the end though!

Part of the backlight process. You can't just slap a light inside it (well you can, but it looks horrid!) The backlight and assorted parts go on the front board, but you need to mess about with the logic board on the back board and insert a bivert chip. Basically it inverts the screen (and the inverted polarisation filter inverts it back), the difference being that the inversion done that way makes the screen a LOT sharper than if the bivert hadn't been done.

Amazing! Have you now started a production line? Blueshift's Renovated Gameboys Inc? Sadly not! I've run out of Gameboys and the parts are really expensive! There's some more stuff I want to try though, so I might try to sell on some of these and do some more

Gameboy chat reminds me of this FINE SONG that I used to own on cassette single! Does Andu remember finding it in my musical cupboard of joy?

There was a very dodgy b-side called 'Playing with the Boy' which of course referred to Gameboy but does not sound right. Buggered if I can find it online.
There was also the Sonic the Hedgehog rave song. Another classic.
