Hotrod was my absolute favorite G1 toy. I completely adored his vehicle mode. I think he was my favorite vehicle mode of the entire franchise. Sunbow's version was fat and wide and never could exist. But the toy felt like it could be a real car if someone wanted it to be.

His chest does look odd. But over all it's still a significant improvement over the first one. Hopefully there are still improvements yet to be made. He needs vehicle kibble on his legs to both bulk them out, and make him look right. His chest needs to be shortened some, and his spoiler needs to be more pronounced.

I'm suddenly less excited about Hot Rod than I thought I'd be. My main concern is how the torso's formed - MP-09 had some issues with the way that the car folded up to make the torso, and ended up with very dubious waist articulation and a tendency to fall apart. Unfortunately, it looks like they're going with the same approach here. I guess I'll have to wait for reviews to come out...

I do hope its still not quite finalised and or not transformed properly because the chest does look a bit wrong. Upper body doesnt look quite as large as it did in the silhouette, but still might be a touch bigger than it should be.

They don't need to do the chest comparement. So they should have it resorted with the final release. Hope we get to see the extra we get with it & a colour image. Are they going to release at same time with Shockwave - so 2 at once?

Good enough, but it doesn't wow like seeing Sideswipe and Prowl did. These figures are getting less and less detailed and the last few all have something off in their proportions.

One could argue less detail brings them closer to the simple and clean Sunbow animation models.

The toys largely informed my views on TFs. The cartoon lasted only a few years before it faded to oblivion, rarely to be seen again before the age of DVD.
Toys that match detail for detail (or lack there of) are meaningless. Shockwave, like Ultra Magnus and Hotrod, are much more toy based in my head and memories. When they lack very specific toy details (shockwave's curvy limbs, Hotrod's legs and car mode, Magnus's inner robot), they are just completely wrong.

I'm not a fan of the licensed vehicle modes. At least not when they affect the toy as much as Bumblebee and potentially scupper the likes of Cliffjumper, but the major upside is that they bring a level of detail to robot mode that TakaraTomy clearly arent that interested in doing. So far I can justify it, Starsabers toy really is that plain, Ironhide is based totally on the animation model and Shockwave is just kind of how I picture Shockwave, probably because with no toy in the UK my mental image is completely based on the cartoon. Hotrod I wait on final images to judge, but on the whole I hope its not a trend that continues. It might also be due to the change back to the earlier MP designer.

What's the issue with Cliffjumper?

Cliffjumper is a porche, and thus looks nothing like his toy OR animation model. Meanwhile MP has become a weird thing with nearly Alternator level vehicles, with sunbow robots. (They should knock out the lisence car thing because Alternators really did this same thing significantly better)

If these are Masterpiece they shouldn't look like simplified cheap toys. I think Prime/Soundwave/Sideswipe/Prowl seem to have been a pinnacle. Things have been on the slide since then, slowly, but then more rapidly with Ironhide. I'm pinning my hopes on Tracks being Prowl quality. This Hot Rod sculpt and the Shockwave one almost look like clay sculpts, the lines aren't straight in many places. I'm hoping these are really really early prototypes and the eventual end results will be far superior. I fear only resculpting though will sort out Hot Rod's flat chest.

I really do think they are that early on. Remember how bad CW superion looked when it was revealed last year and that was close to production. Tracks looks to be of similar quality to the other cars, fingers crossed. Hot Rods chest is just weird.

They may well be timed warning shots. The reissue Quakewaves are a month off, and the Cloud 9 one is still early prototype. If Hasbro/Takara really do take 3P seriously this might just be them firing across their bows to inform buyers that these two are coming.

In the 90's through to around when the shows started to come out on DVD those old cartoons were utterly revered online in a way it's hard to understand now. I recall huge swathes of discussion on ATT and the early big US sites about the cartoon. From someone outside looking in it seemed that Transformers was a cartoon people loved that also happened to have some toys (not much comic chat). -Ralph

Also you can't even begin to imagine what a big deal Devcon was!

And Nightbird. Folk used to lose their minds over Devcon and Nightbird. -Ralph Oh god yeah how could I forget Nightbird. From the way people went on about them, you'd be forgiven for thinking they were two of the main characters of the Transformer mythos, just below Optimus Prime. And now people care so little we've not even had a half-assed repaint pretending to be those characters (okay, so Nightbird IS getting on in Japan and we got a TFCC Devcon, but they've been gunning for a Devcon since the attempt at a Botcon red and blue BM Mirage was foiled)

A rare chance to own a representation of a G1 character. Now we have eleventy billion such things. Not sure if thats' better
