That seems cheap, I assume that means he's tiny?

Depends how big you want him to be. That price will make him the height of the cars I would guess. It's about what Tracks is going for.

You're right. I was looking at the Shockwave trying to think why I'm underwhelmed, and it struck me he reminds me of the cold cast statuette/busts of the Sunbow figures that came out a few years ago. It's all too smooth and simple. YES. Yes, that's exactly it. The first pictures we (well, I) saw of MP-01 and Alternator Smokescreen (which is always my touchstone for awesomeness) produced a response of: "that's so intricate, *and* it transforms - that's amazing!". Whereas these toys... Of course they transform. They're just toys. Plain and - as you say - simple.

To be fair, I think a lot of the 'oh right, that's another box ticked' is the rise of 3rd party who have been doing stuff like this for years. At the time of Alternators and the first Masterpieces, they didn't exist, so the idea of a massive, expensive highly tooled and complex figure for nerds just like us was hugely novel.

One thing not in Shockwave's favour however is that he is a pretty simple figure in any format. He's disadvantaged in that he doesn't have a face, which is where a lot of the detail goes, and as a figure he is fairly bland anyway compared to something like all the car detailing you see on the Autobots and buttons and tape mechanisms on something like Soundwave. I can imagine it would be hard to make him look like an actual masterpiece without pulling away from the feel of the original toy.

Personally, I believe that as with art "Masterpiece" is in the eye of the beholder - complexity and surface detail might be great for some people, but not necessarily everyone. My favourite kinds of transformation are those which are swift and intuitive but at the same time have clever little engineering touches, and I've found latter MPs much better at this than MP-01 or the BTs/Alts (or anything before MP-10, Grimlock excepted).
As for surface detail, it's sometimes been perfect - I think Sideswipe was spot-on, and Grimlock of course - and sometimes lacking, which for me was Prowl (with the official stickers I'm much happier, however much of a bugger they were to apply). Tracks looks like he could be the best yet, and I like that we seem to be getting more accessories that aren't Amazon-exclusives.
Shockwave looks fine to me, I'd just prefer a darker shade of purple (or some orange touches and MP Fistfight). Hot Rod looks pretty good in colour, I'm now slightly tempted - he looks like he would be good to keep on the desk and fiddle with, in stark contrast to his previous MP.

Looking at the accessories, the saw is comically oversized and I'm not sure about the Matrix. I mean... If this is Hot Rod why should he have it?

I'm just not keen on the robot chest at all. Car mode looks excellent, however.

Yeah, I... Am in no rush to replace my Hasbro MP Rodimus, to be fair. Unless any review tells me that that's a helluva lot more solid in hand than it looks.

Personally I'm happy with the simplicity . This Hotrod looks great. I really like the fishing thing.
I also hope he's small. Although a voyager sized Hotrod can get away with it and call himself sports car Rodimus.

I'm actually quite keen on it, and would happily take a Blurr, Kup and Arcee in the same style!

Chest is far too flat, should angle outwards at the top of his shoulders and then fold in about halfway down.
Kind of hurts the toy.

And more pictures here: news.tfw2005.com/2015/10/27/new-masterpiece-hot-rod-magazine-scans-304513 Including a lovely shot of the Roddy's undercarriage (fnarr) which really shows how little they care. Okay, so how the underside of a car looks is a lot less important than the undercarriage of a jet, since it'll always be on the ground. But even so - and I can't remember right now, and I've had too much cider and Del Toro to consider wandering upstairs to confirm - I don't think any of the previous "Masterpiece" cars are this... lazy, in vehicle mode.

He's got skinny legs, a flat chest, no fun bags, and belly-matrix issues. And MP Magnus looks as bland as a tame chicken korma.
But there is something nostalia-rama about it n'no mistake.

I'm still pissed off they've done a SECOND Hot Rod/Rodimus when we're desperate for some of the other Autobot cars. Mirage, Jazz. And the Decepticons are still incredibly missing, err, ohhh what'shisname? You know, big grey dude... With the big gun on his arm...?

The undercarriage of this MP Hot Rod is very reminiscent of G1 Hot Rod, but who looks at the cars from underneath anyway? Every time I see this new Hot Rod it grows on me more every day. he does look much better in colour and with all with his chest paineted/stickered up than he did in the grey mold. Attachments:

I dunno what the fuss is. As soon as I saw the undercarriage I was happy that it's going to transform as intuitively as the G1

I guess the thighs are so skinny so they can telescope into the lower legs. Rest of it looks like a shell former and that's only ever been cool in BW-II/Neo

You may class this has being picky. but the one thing I don't like about the MP Rodimus Hotrod is the lower back - the toy should be like with how we see him in the cartoon comic. Not like the toys which are the bottom of the rear car being the lower back so it sticks out. The must be someway to sort this out so the toy is solid going from the waist & would look better.
